Tomas Callanan Slips and trips Slip, Trip & Fall Prevention These types of accidents are not unavoidable. There are certain issues, which can be addressed in order to greatly reduce the risk of them occurring such as; Wearing correct shoes Using slip resistant surfaces Good Housekeeping Adequate lighting Good classroom management Always walk. Never run and WATCHING WHERE YOU ARE GOING

Tomas Callanan Walkways Identify designated walking areas clearly. Keep walkways well lit. Clean up spills IMMEDIATELY. Keep walkways clear of obstructions. Never run inside the workshop Walkways marked between two red lines

4 Tomas Callanan Obstructions Obstructions and clutter left lying around can pose a severe tripping hazard. Obstructions that can not be removed must be clearly highlight through the use of training and signage. In technology classrooms, waste often falls to the floor. This waste may present a tripping hazard If you see anything on the floor or in a walkway- Pick It Up. • Even a pen or a small piece of waste wood. • Don’t assume someone else will pick it up. You may see it but the next person may not

5 Tomas Callanan housekeeping The classroom should always be kept in a clean and sanitary condition. No practical lesson is complete until the tidy-up has been completed. A scheduled cleaning programme is implemented in all technology labs. A large number of accidents are caused by untidy classrooms. Trailing leads, misplaced tools and other clutter all contribute to accident causes. People will very rarely slip on a clean, dry and obstruction free floor. Do not allow rubbish to build up. TIDY AS YOU GO.

6 Tomas Callanan emergency exits Knowing how to quickly escape a building can save your life. Ensure that you always know where the nearest emergency exit is. • To help with this, buildings (and your classroom) are equipped with a suitable series of signs to allow for easy identification of the closest safe route for evacuating a building
