2 Bell Ringer: Why were countries wanting to explore and settle the New World?

3 Changes in English gov’t and religion….
***The colonies use these changes to form the ideas for government in the United States***

4 English Society Magna Carta 1215 restricts power of the King
he has to follow the law too!!!! first document to establish that idea protects the rights of citizens they have more say in the gov’t

5 English Society New religion thanks King Henry VIII!
what religion did he establish? wanted a divorce from wife… the church wouldn’t let him so he got rid of Catholicism in England est. the Anglican Church of England now the official church in England is PROTESTANT!

built England into a sea power responsible for the defeat of Spanish Armada… why important? England develops greatest navy in the world passes laws to support England’s new religion Protestantism

New ways of thinking changed ideas about gov’t and human rights – Emphasized a search for knowledge – Birth of democratic ideals – Science replace religion Influences U.S. independence and founding of our gov’t

bloodless coup (seizure of power) new leaders… William and Mary establish a constitutional monarchy less power for the King, Parliament has power to create and pass laws

English Bill of Rights (1689) limits power of the monarch ensures rights of Parliament and all Englishmen trial by jury, free speech, no cruel and unusual punishment Parliament has power to tax

judges make decisions based on custom or prior rulings

What were the reasons for English colonization? population growth… why? better diets due to Columbian Exchange = less death new policy of enclosure (fence in land for farming) meant no land left for poor increased unemployment send people to New World to work tradition of 1st born inherits all of father’s land AKA none for the younger children… they head off to the New World to find land/fortunes Competition around the world.. Money, land = Power, influence

13 English Settlement in America
The Lost Colony (1587) first attempt at English settlement in the New World expedition led by Sir Walter Raleigh group of 100 colonists (mostly families) Governor John White settlement disappeared and were never discovered Virginia Dare, first English born in the Americas.

14 The Lost Colony, What Happened??
Theory: 1- Integration (leave settlement and live w/ tribe) 2- Patched Map (moved to this fort, why did he cover it up) 3- Powhatan (tribe slaughtered settlement, found this out in Jamestown, original stone found) 4- Drought (tribes raid settlement b/c of food, settlers leave) 5- Croatoan (moved to that island)
