Counting to Students need to know how to count and write to 120, starting anywhere on the number chart. They also need to know 1 more, 1 less, 10 more, and 10 less (mentally).

3. Hiding Assessment
In October, students will take an assessment in math called the “Hiding Assessment”. Students must use Mental Subtraction to solve the problem. For Example: The teacher will show the student 8 cubes. The teacher will hide 5 of the cubes under her hand. She will ask the student how many cubes she is hiding. The student should use mental subtraction to determine that 3 cubes are hiding. They must do this in a snap (just like reading sight words).

4. Missing Addends Tests Will begin in October.
Assessments are given once a week.

5. Missing Addends
After Fall Break, the students will begin seeing math word problems in which they have to solve for the unknown addend.
Students must:
Write the correct equation.
Draw a picture.
Write a solution. “I solved this problem by…”
The equation, picture, and solution must match.
Example Problem:
Nineteen (19) birds are in a tree. Seven are red birds and the rest are blue birds. How many blue birds are in the tree?

6. Word Problems
I have nine counters. How many can be red and how many can be blue?

I solved this problem by drawing all the ways to make nine. I drew 1+8=9, 2+7=9, 3+6=9, 4+5=9, 5+4=9, 6+3=9, 7+2=9, and 8+1=9.
Students receive up to three points per word problem. 1 point for the correct equation. 1 point if the picture matches the equation. 1 point for the correct written solution that matches the picture and equation.

7. Addition and Subtraction Strategies
In order to get full credit, students must use the strategy correctly, have a picture of the strategy used, a number sentence and written explanation.

10. Reading
Your child should be practicing sight words daily (they are located in their agenda).
They should know these words in a snap.
At least 6 of the 8 lists should be mastered by the end of the year because most of these words are found in levels A-J.

11. Reading Continued…
Your child should be reading on or above Level J by the end of the year.
Your child should have a bag of books that they bring home daily. The bag should have books on their reading level and a bookmark with questions. Please listen to your child read the book several times and then ask them questions that are listed on the bookmark to make sure they understood what they read.

12. Writing Students must write across five pages.
They are assessed on three types of writing:
narrative, informational, and opinion.
Each piece needs to consist of a beginning,
three chapters and an ending.
Students are also scored on details,
elaboration, and conventions such as spelling
and punctuation.
