Warm Up 9/19 - Identify a theme WORD for the Prologue, Chapter One, and Chapter Two (one each).

Learning Targets I can apply what I learned in a class discussion to the group work activities that require close reading of the text.

Activity We’ll break into six groups: 4-5 students each. GO!
The PROLOGUE: Answer these questions: What does the narrator’s “invisibility” really mean? Why do you think so? Find 3 quotations that support it. Chapter One – What is Ellison saying about invisibility in the fighting scene? How does it apply to both black AND white men? What is he saying about the animalistic nature of man? Again, apply to both the black and the white men. Find one quotation each to support. Chapter Two: Identify three JUXTAPOSING images (i.e., beautiful, rural scene vs. the gut-wrenching story). Find one quotation for each. ALL GROUPS must list the images and/or sensory information that is repeated, if any, through their sections.

Reading Read independently. OR, I can read to the class. Whatever is preferred.
