Volcano Landforms

Types of volcanos Shield Volcano
Thin layers of lava pour out of a vent and harden. Over time this builds up a gentle sloping mountain (AKA shield volcano). Hawaii is an example of s shield volcano

Shield Volcanos

Cinder Cone Volcanos Sometimes when a volcano has a high viscosity it can produce a cinder cone volcano. These volcanos do not experience much lava flow at all. Instead when they erupt large amounts of ash and cinders are ejected from the vent. This forms a nice cone around the vent. Sometimes up to hundreds and thousands of feet tall.

Cinder Cone volcanos

Composite Volcano Some volcanos have varying eruptions with heavy lava flows and with eruptions with ash, cinder, and bombs. This are called Composite volcanos. These are tall, cone shaped mountains in which layers of lava alternate with layers of ash. Example- Mt. St Helens, Mt. Fuji

Composite Volcanos

Calderas Calderas are huge hold left by the collapse of a volcanic mountain. A huge eruption can empty the main vent. The mountain becomes a hollow shell that can’t support the weight at the top of the mountain.

Calderas

Volcanic Sills and Dikes
A volcanic dike is formed when lava forces its way across rock layers A volcanic sill is formed when lava squeezes between horzional rock layers.
