4. Guidelines for Writing an Expository Essay
The topic sentence must state what is being explained by the paragraph.
The second sentence will list all materials that will be needed.
The supporting sentences will be step-by-step instructions.
Proofread carefully to make sure all the crucial steps have been included.
Test your instructions. Revise if necessary.

5. Prewriting – Explanatory Essay
Create two lists. One list should include all materials needed for the process being explained. The second list should order the steps.
Steps should be ordered using words such as first, next, then, after, and last.
Identify the audience.
