2 What Is Expository Writing?
Definition:Expository Writing gives information about a topic. It may explain ideas, give directions, or show how to do something.

4 Guidelines for Writing an Expository Essay
The topic sentence must state what is being explained by the paragraph. The second sentence will list all materials that will be needed. The supporting sentences will be step-by-step instructions. Proofread carefully to make sure all the crucial steps have been included. Test your instructions. Revise if necessary.

5 Prewriting – Explanatory Essay
Create two lists. One list should include all materials needed for the process being explained. The second list should order the steps. Steps should be ordered using words such as first, next, then, after, and last. Identify the audience.

6 Writing – Explanatory Essay
Topic sentence – states what is being explained Second sentence – list what is needed to perform task Following sentences – step-by-step instructions Concluding sentence – informs reader that the process is complete (restates the main idea)

7 Writing Assignment Choose a topic in which you are very familiar. Here are some examples. cleaning the dishes washing the laundry cleaning your room giving a manicure Use the prewriting and writing guidelines to construct an explanatory paragraph on this topic.
