1 Countries in Conflict Essay
Research Cards

2 I am going over the research notes at the beginning of class today.
Objective: Students will select one literary criticism article and two website sources in order to gather research for the explanatory essay. Have a seat! If you owe me the brainstorming exercise from yesterday, please place it on your desk. I am going over the research notes at the beginning of class today. This powerpoint is posted on the “Quarter 1” page on my website.

3 Reminder: Location of Resources
ALL the resources you need are located in two places: Classroom App All of the PowerPoints from each of my classes. Today, you will be reviewing them. I have created a page on my website that contains all the other materials you will need, including the literary criticism articles on LOTF.

4 Reminder: Research Notes Requirements
EACH SOURCE must be written in MLA format with the 5 notes you have taken (don’t forget to put quotation marks around those notes!). Resources: one literary criticism source from my website, and two sources on your country (use the PowerPoints on Classroom). Use OWL to write each source in MLA format as they will later appear on your Works Cited Page.

5 The next slide is an example of a notecard
You may get to OWL by using my website

6 Discusses how women are portrayed in novel
Broder, Lesley. “Women Stripped of Humanity: John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men.” Women in Literature: Reading Through the Lens of Gender. Ed. Jerilyn Fisher. Westport: Greenwood, Discusses how women are portrayed in novel Curley’s wife is lonely; uses her sexuality to deal with her pain Women portrayed as ‘nurturing or troublesome’ (p. 224) “She is the only maternal representation of women; more often women are cast as conduits to misfortune for men” (p. 224). INCLUDE MLA FORMAT OF SOURCE YOU WILL HAVE FIVE NOTES (ALL CAN BE QUOTES)

7 What if I find a great source with only 1 or 2 pieces of information?
Great question! Make it a fourth source in addition to the required three. That way, you only have to write down those 1 or 2 things you want from it. You must have three sources that have five notes each.

8 Where do you take notes?? You can use any of the following for taking notes: NoodleTools Google Docs Cornell Notes (write MLA format in left margin; template on my website) Notecards Regardless of how you complete your notes, you need a hard copy of them for me on Thursday (we will have the laptop cart, so you will be able to print them that day).

9 Some thoughts on gathering research…
Remember, this is simply gathering information that you think may be useful later. Look for notes that apply to our topic, which is why the country is dysfunctional and how it is affecting the common people. It is very likely that you will change your mind on which theme you want to write about while you are gathering info on your country. This is perfectly fine!
