Remember MOST players are NOT Division 1 prospects!
What separates you from the guys you on your team, the players you are competing against and the players they are comparing you to in recruiting?

4. The Process
I put together a prospect sheet with all information by class (Name, grade, #, HT/ WT, G.P.A., SAT/ACT, Contact Important)
I send this out to all colleges and to various recruiting services / databases that are paid for by the colleges.
Coaches will evaluate players on HUDL and contact me or Coach Katzmark if they are interested to learn more.
Coaches visit our campus to check our prospect sheet, watch film, meet players and talk with me about them. We supply them info- they decide who they think can play at their level or fit their position needs!
The coach nor the high school “GETS” the player a scholarship!

5. The Importance of Academics (G.P.A and Test)
Core G.P.A. (Math, Science, English, SS, Foreign Language) – We need A’s and B’s!
SAT or ACT Test – Take this early and often – It is very important to have a test score by the spring of your Junior year. Send a PDF copy of your test to Coach Zito so he can give it to coaches when they come to recruit.
Recovery / Off Campus Class – Make sure the classes are accepted by the NCAA for eligibility (Faith Academy is not accepted)

6. ACT and SAT Tests
ACT – – Mark all answers – You get credit for correct answers only – More Science
SAT – – Only guess if you can narrow down the answers to 2 possible correct answers – You get marked off for incorrect answers –More Verbal
The earlier you take these tests (By Jan/Feb of your Junior year the better!)
Select Code 9999 when you register for the score to be reported to NCAA

7. Academic Minimums by Division
NCAA Division 1 FBS or FCS– Minimum 2.3 Core G.P.A. in 16 Core classes and 10 classes must be completed by your 7th semester with sliding scale- Academic Redshirt
NCAA Division 2 – Minimum 2.2 Core G.P.A. but you can be a partial qualifier (practice only) with a 2.0 Core G.P.A in 16 Core classes with sliding scale.
NCAA Division 3- Based on each school admissions – Typically these are academic schools with high admissions. All $ is based on need or academics!
NAIA – 2.0 Cumulative G.P.A., Top ½ of Class or 18 ACT – 860 SAT (2 of 3 qualifies you)
Register with NCAA Clearinghouse by spring of Junior Year

8. NCAA Division 1 Sliding Scale

9. HUDL Highlight Video and Game Video
Make sure you have a completed Premium Highlight Video on HUDL
First 3-5 Plays must be the best – Keep the coach watching!
Make sure you are identified BEFORE the snap with the indicator
Make sure we understand what a HL is – Position coaches are supposed to mark them as the season progresses – Talk with your position coach or Coach Katzmark to help with this!
Remember coaches will watch game video at some point – They will watch what you do when (the ball is away from you, you do not get the ball, when you make a bad play, when you are losing a game)

10. College Coaches Visit Campus
Coaches will visit campus throughout the year
They will receive a prospect sheet (Player Name, HT/WT, G.P.A., Test Scores, Contact Information)
They will view video (With Hudl they can do this anytime)
They will meet / talk to players they are interested in
Make sure you are IN SCHOOL, DRESS APPROPRIATELY, NO CHEWING GUM, SHAKE HANDS, EYE CONTACT, YES SIR AND NO SIR.
Late April / May – Spring Recruiting – 1 Visit – May come back to watch practice
Fall – Usually on their off week – May visit to watch a game
After Their Season – To Continue Recruiting process

11. College Coach Allowed Contacts
Spring – 1 contact and 1 phone call in May
Text, Direct Message and are main forms of coaches communication - Return All Messages
Unlimited Mail – If it is not written in personal handwriting that means you are on a list – Personal letter means A LOT more!
September 1st of Senior Season – Coaches are allowed to call a prospect 1 time per week.
If you are allowed to call them unlimited, but they cannot return your call until September of Senior season.

12. Summer Camps / Combines
Be selective in which camps you attend
How interested is the coach? (Did he reach out to you in May via phone, text or DM?)
Attend 3 camps / combines
Are you a good tester?
Will the camp showcase your ability or your challenges?
Attend 1 day camps ONLY for recruiting!
Team comes first!

13. Recruiting Services I would not pay $ for a recruiting service
They are paid to get you recruited – your coaches are not!
College coaches are not interested in talking to a recruiting service, 7 on 7 coach, personal trainer, etc. – They want to talk to your HEAD COACH
You have access to all video via HUDL
At the end of the day the measurables, transcripts, test scores, game video and head coach recommendation will GET YOU THE SCHOLARSHIP!

14. Scholarships / Financial Aid
Division 1 FBS (UGA, Ga Tech, Ga State) – 85 Full Scholarships
Division 1 FCS (Mercer, Wofford, Eastern Kentucky) – 63 Full Scholarships
Division 2 (Shorter, West Georgia, Valdosta St.) -35 Scholarships – Most are broken up and provided in financial aid packages
NAIA (Reinhardt) – 25 Scholarships – Most are broken up and provided in financial aid packages
Division 3 or Division 1 FCS Pioneer League (Lagrange, Stetson) – NO Athletic Scholarships – All are financial aid packages (Financial Aid, Academics)
Junior Colleges (GMC) – Some scholarship / Some are not- Typically these are for SEC / ACC type guys that do not qualify
Parents – For Division 2, 3, NAIA and JUCO it is very important to complete the FAFSA form as soon as possible so they can build a package.

15. D2, D3, NAIA and JUCO Packages
1st - FAFSA Form –
2nd - Academics (G.P.A. and SAT/ACT Test Score) – Scale for $
3rd – Athletic Scholarship (If Available)
4th – Loan / Parent pay the balance
Important – D2 / NAIA athletic scholarships can go up each year depending on position on depth chart / performance
Most D2 / NAIA do hold some $ for Division 1 FBS or FCS transfers – This is why there is not a lot of $ for freshman!

16. Preferred Walk On Status (PWO)
If you do not receive an “offer” at the school of your choice, it may be possible to receive a PWO.
Division 1 FBS schools can have 20 PWO’s on the roster.
You receive ZERO scholarship $ as a PWO. You may be good enough to earn a scholarship, but remember you are competing vs other players that have a financial investment by the school and coaches.
My best advice is to go where they really want you!

17. Visiting Schools
Official- School pays (Now can be in spring / summer or after season of senior year) - NCAA limit is 5 per student-athlete – Rare to get all 5 visits – Division 3 – You pay to visit!
Unofficial- You pay – You can go on unlimited unofficial visits

18. Timeline of Events Rising Juniors Rising Seniors Sept 1 – Letters
Phone Calls
Division 1 – April 15- May 31 – 1 Call
Division 2 – June 15 on – No more than 3 calls
Division 3 – No Limit
Rising Seniors
Letters – Unlimited
Division 1 – Sept 1st – 1 per week
Division 2 – June 15 – 1 per week

19. Timeline Continued
Coaches will make on campus visits in spring and fall
Coaches will / can make in home visit (Head Coach and Recruiting Coach)
Official Visits
Offers / Signing Day (Early Signing Period in December / Official Signing Day in February)
Players signing Division 1 (FBS or FCS) will sign in December or February – All others can sign then, but most will sign after those dates – This is NORMAL!

20. Offers
Some players will receiver early offers but many players will continued to be evaluated throughout camps and senior film prior to being offered a scholarship.
Coaches will “offer” more scholarships than spots they have available. Some offers are not valid until you go to their camp and perform and visit their campus. First to commit gets the $!
Some “offers” can go away as fast as they have arrived! It is all verbal and means NOTHING until you sign a NLI and scholarship agreement.
Division 3 / FCS Non- Scholarship “offer” a roster spot to prospects.
Getting the 1st offer is the hardest…..Coaches always ask “Who else has offered him?”

21. Player Responsibilities
Core G.P.A. – A’s and B’s
Take SAT or ACT early – Send PDF report of all tests to Coach Zito
Provide great Game Video
Make sure your HUDL highlight is prepared
Make sure you have a Twitter Account they can identify you and it is clean! Clean up Voice Mail! Be in school and present yourself in a 1st class manner! Return all messages!
Be the best player and teammate you can be! What will I say about your leadership, work ethic and commitment when that time comes? Give me A LOT to BRAG about!

22. Parent Responsibilities
Make sure athlete has signed up and taken the SAT or ACT.
Make sure athlete has registered with the NCAA clearinghouse.
Encourage and support the athlete in all areas (academics, off-season program, summer program)
Make sure the athlete’s HUDL premium highlight is complete.
Communicate with college coaches and / or Coach Zito through out the process

23. Coach’s Responsibilities
Educate Parents and Players about the recruiting process
Collect information for the prospect sheet and have copies available for coaches as they visit campus
Collect transcripts and test scores and have copies available for coaches as they visit campus.
Attend college recruiting fairs to show video, share transcripts/test scores and promote all of our players.
Send out video / information on prospects via or twitter to colleges
Send recruiting services all available information on prospects
Meet and communicate with college coaches about prospects
