1 Succession Living Environment

2 Objectives…I can… Describe how ecosystems recover from a disturbance.
Compare primary and secondary succession. Define pioneers and climax community.

3 Succession The regular pattern of change over time in an ecosystem

4 Pioneers – first organisms in an area
ex: lichens

5 Climax Community – final, stable community that forms if an area is left undisturbed
Ex: biomes

6 Terrestrial Succession

7 Types of Succession Primary Succession – occurs where no ecosystem existed previously (on new volcanic islands, where glaciers retreat, etc.) Secondary Succession – occurs where an ecosystem has previously been (after forest fires, floods, etc.)

8 Aquatic Succession Ecosystem changes from a lake or pond to a forest over time Sediment from erosion and decomposition slowly accumulates in lakes – they become more shallow

9 Place the pictures in order.
