6 Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels: The Communist Manifesto
“Not only are [the workers] slaves of the bourgeois class, and of the bourgeois state; they are daily and hourly enslaved by the machine, by the overseer, and above all, by the individual bourgeois manufacturer.”

7 Why communism? “The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles.” —Karl Marx The wealthy have always taken advantage of workers, in every civilization, throughout history.

8 “Workers of the world, Unite!”
Workers in every country have more in common with each other than they do with wealthy people from their own countries. Working classes = PROLETARIANS Wealthy classes = BOURGEOISIE

9 Revolution Marx said communism requires violent revolution as workers take control of the means of production Marx said once workers establish a communist system, government would become unnecessary and it would “wither away”

10 “Capital is dead labor, which, vampire-like, lives only by sucking living labor, and lives the more, the more labor it sucks.” --Karl Marx
