2. Leading up to Texas’s Statehood...
Most of the Republic’s presidents supported annexing Texas to the U.S.
Houston did, Lamar didn’t
Anson Jones is responsible for completing the task
John Tyler becomes president of U.S. in 1941, after U.S. congress had already rejected TX annexation once
This caused him to worry about Great Britain's influence in Texas.
He didn’t think they needed to be getting involved like they did earlier on in American History

4. The Treaty to Annex Texas
Some Texans opposed annexation, but over the 9 years many Texans grew fond of the idea
In the U.S., statehood for Texas revolved around slavery since slave and free states were almost perfectly balanced at the time
Many americans opposed adding a slave state for fear of a war with Mexico
In 1844, the U.S. Senate rejected the Texas annexation treaty.

5. MANIFEST DESTINY!!! (not like the video game Destiny….)
MANY Americans supported the idea of manifest destiny (westward expansion to the Pacific Ocean)
It became the main issue in the next presidential election...Who is going to continue growing the country? Who will make it the most powerful?
James K. Polk, who is pro-expansion, is elected president of U.S. in 1844.
Polk’s victory showed a strong American approval for Texas Annexation.
The last thing President Tyler did was ask Congress for a Joint Resolution for annexation. It was passed in February 1845, right after President Polk took office.

6. Texas Enters the U.S.
The joint resolution (formal intent) was more favorable for the U.S. than the treaty would have been
U.S.--gets taxes on public lands, military outposts from Texas
TX--gets to keep public lands, enters as a state not a territory, stays pro-slavery
Texans had strong U.S. ties and were badly in need of military and monetary aid as they grew closer to war with Mexico
Texans approve annexation by a large majority in 1845
President Polk signed the Texas Admission Act on December 28, 1845, making Texas the 28th state!
