Objectives: Explain the purpose of Operations Management Understand the role of an operations manager Learn how the basic functions of management apply to Operations Management Identify the basic product development phases

Operations Managers Like other managers, they plan, organize, lead or direct, and evaluate or control Their focus is on the product: Designing Producing Testing Packaging

6 Operations Planning- Product Design
Product designs starts with an idea. Concept is approved and specifications (“specs”) are created Management approves the specs Detailed drawings are created Scale models or prototypes are built Product is manufactured

7 Operations Planning- Scheduling
Who? Where? What? Why? When? Operations managers create and maintain project schedules to keep track of who’s doing what, where and when.

8 Operations Planning- Process Improvement
Repetitive processes for actions (ex. product design to quality control or the customer support process) can be examined and adjusted to create the best product in the most efficient manner, and at the lowest possible cost.

9 Organizing Operations managers keep production moving and on-time, organize production schedules, team schedules, delivery deadlines, quality assurance and quality control reviews, and final product packaging

11 Leading and Directing Product Managers
Know everything about the product Responsible for products success and marketability May or may not lead a team or staff Sometimes make tough calls about their products to protect the company Follow a product through its lifecycle

Guarantee products meet company guidelines and customer expectations Quality Assurance teams (or “QA”) Perform random inspections on product Test and evaluate products Test effectiveness of processes Give feedback for improvement Quality Control (or “QC”) Inspect every product produced Destroy defective products
