1. Chapter One: Story of the Door
Mr Utterson, a lawyer, and his friend Mr Enfield go for a walk. As they are walking they pass a strange door of ‘sordid negligence’ in an otherwise very pretty street.
Enfield tells Utterson a story involving this strange door. One night, in the early hours, Enfield sees a man trample over a young girl. He chased after the man and brought him back to the scene of the crime.
To avoid ‘making a scene’ and possibly involving the police, the man offers to pay the girl and her family money. The man opened the strange door with a key and then came back out with a cheque and some money.
Enfield describes the man as ‘downright detestable’ and ’deformed’ and reveals that his name is Mr Hyde.

2. Chapter One: Story of the Door

3. Chapter Two: Search for Mr Hyde
After the walk, Mr Utterson is disturbed by Enfield’s story. Utterson goes to his safe and takes out the will of Dr Jekyll who is a friend of his. The will states that if Dr Jekyll ever disappeared then all of his belongings and money should be given to Mr Hyde.
Utterson visits Dr Lanyon who is an old mutual friend of his and Jekyll’s. Lanyon says he doesn’t know who Mr Hyde is and hasn’t seen Jekyll for nearly 10 years. Utterson goes home and has awful nightmares.
Utterson decides that he is going to watch the strange door to see who comes and goes from it. Utterson sees Hyde unlocking it and he speaks to him. He describes Hyde as having ‘Satan’s signature upon [his] face’
Utterson worries that Hyde may be getting ready to kill Jekyll in order to benefit from the will.

4. Chapter Two: Search for Mr Hyde
After the walk, Mr Utterson is disturbed by Enfield’s story. Utterson goes to his ______ and takes out the will of Dr ________ who is a friend of his. The will states that if Dr Jekyll ever disappeared then all of his belongings and money should be given to Mr _______.

Two weeks later, Utterson stays behind after a dinner party to talk to Jekyll about the will.
Jekyll brushes off Utterson’s concerns and compares him to Lanyon who he describes as ‘hidebound’ (cautious and prudent towards advances in medical science). It becomes clear that this is the reason why Lanyon and Jekyll don’t speak anymore.
Utterson keeps trying to talk to Jekyll about the will and Jekyll reveals a strange relationship with Hyde. Jekyll is very secretive about this relationship with Hyde but asks Utterson to promise to fulfil his will, if needs be.
Jekyll tries to reassure Utterson and says ‘the moment I choose, I can be rid of Mr Hyde’ but asks ‘I beg of you to let it sleep’

6. Chapter Three: Dr Jekyll was quite at Ease

A year or so later, an elderly man is brutally beaten to death with a walking cane by Hyde in an ‘ape-like fury’. A maid witnesses the murder and recognises Hyde.
A letter addressed to Utterson is found on the body so the police contact him. He realises the murder weapon which is a broken half of a walking cane he gave to Jekyll a few years ago. When he is told that the murderer is Hyde, he takes the police officers to Hyde’s house.
A elderly woman answers the door and is described as having ‘an evil face, smoothed by hypocrisy; but her manners were excellent’
They are told that Hyde has not been at home for nearly two months but when they search the house, they find the other half of the walking cane and signs of a quick and messy exit.

8. Chapter Four: The Carew Murder Case

9. Chapter Five: Incident of the Letter
Utterson goes to Jekyll’s house. Jekyll is described as ‘looking deadly sick’. Utterson asks him if he is hiding Hyde but Jekyll denies this and says that he will never see or hear of Hyde again. Jekyll shows Utterson a letter from Hyde which confirms this.
Utterson asks Guest, another lawyer, to compare the handwriting in the letter and on an invitation from Jekyll. Guest says that there is a resemblance between the two.
Utterson believes that Jekyll has forged the letter to cover Hyde’s escape and as a result ‘his blood ran cold in his veins’.

10. Chapter Five: Incident of the Letter
Utterson goes to Jekyll’s house. Jekyll is described as ‘looking deadly ______’. Utterson asks him if he is hiding ______ but ______ denies this and says that he will never see or hear of Hyde again. Jekyll shows Utterson a letter from Hyde which ________ this.

Utterson writes to Jekyll in an attempt to find out what has happened. He gets a reply which says that Jekyll has become very disturbed and says he is ‘the chief of sinners’ as well as ‘the chief of sufferers’.
Two weeks later, Lanyon dies and leaves a letter for Utterson in an envelope that says it cannot be read until Jekyll dies or disappears. Utterson, being a respectable and honest man, locks it in his safe.
Utterson tries to visit Jekyll but every time Poole (his butler) says he will not have any visitors.

They walk past Jekyll’s window and see him. He is described as a ‘disconsolate prisoner’. Utterson shouts out to him in a friendly way and Jekyll replies. However, all of a sudden, Jekyll stops with a face of ‘abject terror and despair’.
As the change in Jekyll’s face is so sudden and shocking, it is said that Utterson and Enfield’s blood is frozen. The two men walk away in silence and do not discuss what they’ve seen.
At the end of the chapter, Utterson says ‘God forgive us!’ but Enfield only nods in agreement.

14. Chapter Seven: Incident at the Window
Utterson and ________ are on another walk around the city.

Poole (Jekyll’s butler) arrives at Utterson’s house and asks him to come and see Jekyll immediately. They go to the house and through to Jekyll’s laboratory but the door is locked. There is a voice inside the laboratory but it does not sound like Jekyll. The two men believe that it is Hyde.
Poole says that the voice has requested a specific chemical for a few days but every time Poole has brought it, he has been told it is not pure enough. Poole says that he only saw a glimpse of the man but he describes him as a ‘thing’ and a ‘creature’.
Eventually, Poole and Utterson break down the door to the lab and find a body twitching on the floor. In the man’s hand is a broken vial. The body is too small to be Jekyll but it is wearing clothes that would fit him.
On the table in the laboratory is a will which was written that day and leaves everything to Mr Utterson. There is also a confession from Jekyll and a letter asking Utterson to read the letter he gave to Lanyon (which Utterson now has)
Utterson tells Poole that he will return once he has read all of the letters.

16. Chapter Eight: The Last Night
