2 The Staff A staff is made up of five horizontal lines and four spaces.

3 Music Alphabet Pitches are named after the first seven letters of the alphabet (A B C D E F G).

4 Clef A clef is a musical symbol placed at the beginning of the staff that determines the letter names of the lines and spaces.

6 Line Notes The five lines read upwards spell EGBDF which you can remember using the phrase ' E very G ood B oy D oes F ine '.

7 Space Notes The four spaces read upwards spell FACE which you can remember using the word FACE .

19 Grand Staff A grand staff is a combination of both the treble and bass clef connected by a vertical line on the left side of the staves (plural staff).
