Today’s Objectives Understand ethical guidelines that protect humans & animals in psychological research Notes, read prison experiment from website & answer reflection questions Bell Ringer What are ethics? Do you believe it is okay to do scientific research on animals? Why or why not?
2
Directions: Read through this PowerPoint
Click on Stanford link when finished Read through the experiment Answer the 4 reflection questions from the power point on a separate sheet of paper to hand in!
3
Module 4: Research Strategies
Ethics: Human Research (Four Basic Principles) * use your guided note sheet * Module 4: Research Strategies
4
1. Informed Consent Participants must be informed, in advance, about:
the general nature of the research, and any potential risk. Participants must have the right to refuse participation or withdraw at any time.
5
2. Right to be Protected from Harm and Discomfort
Studies involving harm or discomfort may be conducted only under certain circumstances, and only with the informed consent of the participants.
6
3. Right of Confidentiality
Individual data about research participants should never be discussed or released.
7
4. Right to Debriefing Participants have a right to receive a complete explanation of the research at the end of the study. This is extremely important if the research involves deception.
8
Ethics: Animal Research
Module 4: Research Strategies
9
Reasons for Animal Research
Interest in animal behavior as a topic of study Data from animal studies may apply to humans. Easier to do some type of studies (genetics) due to the shorter life span of animals
10
Reasons for Animal Research
Easier to exercise more control over experiments with animals as compared to humans Procedures that are not ethical to perform on humans may be considered acceptable when performed on animals
11
Care of Animals used in Research
Animals used in research must: Have clean housing with adequate ventilation Have appropriate food Be well cared for
12
Now go to www.prisonexp.org and see an example of an unethical experiment.

Reflection Questions If you were a prisoner, would you have been able to endure the experience? What would you have done differently than those subjects did? If you were imprisoned in a "real" prison for five years or more, could you take it? 2) Do you think that kids from an urban working class environment would have broken down emotionally in the same way as did our middle-class prisoners? Why? What about women? 3) Was it ethical to do this study? Was it right to trade the suffering experienced by participants for the knowledge gained by the research? (The experimenters did not take this issue lightly, although the Slide Show may sound somewhat matter-of-fact about the events and experiences that occurred). 4) Knowing what this research says about the power of prison situations to have a corrosive effect on human nature, what recommendations would you make about changing the correctional system in this country?
