4 This Unit… Reading Guides for Chapters 10 & 12 will be posted online today – due on test day Test on Land Use (to include soil, farming/agriculture, mining, forestry) on January 15th (A-day) and 19th (B-day)

5 Food for Thought… TED Talk – The Other Inconvenient Truth

6 The End of Civilization?
Read the articles on your table. Summarize the reading – include: Problems/Causes/Effects/Solutions Turn into folders for a grade (make sure your name is on it )

7 Discussion With your shoulder partner, identify the most shocking discovery from the reading. With your face partner, discuss how the article made you feel. As a group, decide what the leading issue causing food insecurity might be.

8 Key Ideas – How things have changed
Traditional agriculture relies on low-input polycultures Lower risk from disease, weather devastation Better for the soil/varied nutrient demands Slash & burn agriculture = 10 to 30 year recovery of area but utilizes natural fertilizers and lessens water demand (different root depths) Green revolution/industrial farming Monculture – genetically modified, high yield crops – depletes soil, vulnerable Industrial fertilizers and irrigation Very energy intensive

9 Meat Consumption Rising steadily as more nations become developed with increasing incomes (think of China) 56 Billion animals are raised and slaughtered for food each year ~50% of worlds meat comes from rangeland & enclosed pastures Other 50% is from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) Grain requirements for a nation increase as they move to animal-based diets Countries forced to secure their grain sources or land sources as their demands rise

10 Food, Inc. Over the next 2 class periods we will be watching Food, Inc. Answer the questions on the handout as we go – this will be a grade. The information in this Academy Award nominated, Emmy Award winning film is full of relevant information for this unit – please pay attention. Link
