1 2-15-18 T2.1 d To Use The Calculator To Find All Trig Values
Got ID?

2 Class opener: Find all six trig functions ( in EXACT value), given the following information:
III II -5 17

3 Active Learning Questions?
III II

4 LESSON : Using calculators.
***First, make sure your calculator is in degree mode (DRG button, select DEG, hit ENTER)*** Find sin 73° on your calculator to 4 decimal places. If you have a single line calculator, your function goes in after the angle: “73 sin” Put an ANGLE into the function, get a RATIO out! Find: 1. sin (-157°) 2. cos 0.123° 3. tan 583° Use the negative sign, not subtraction. I prefer to close my parentheses

5 What about DMS? (4 decimal places) Try: 1. cos 152° 17’ 2. tan 68° 55’

6 We’ve looked at negative and we’ve looked at DMS, what about a negative angle that is in DMS? (4 decimal places) But is this NOT correct? Why not? There is a difference! But these are the same!

7 To find cotangent, secant, and cosecant, remember that they are reciprocal functions for tangent, cosine, and sine: * Let’s look at sec 165° You may use parentheses or not, the calculator will take the function, first

8 Try these (4 decimal places):
sec (-58°) cot 17° 34’ csc (-128° 43’)

9 Find the sin 3.8 (What do you notice about this???)
Change your calculator to radians: DRG button, select RAD, hit ENTER Try (4 dec. pl.): tan (-5.1) sec (-1.9)

10 Active Learning Assignment: p. 280: 5-10 (a & b only) p
Active Learning Assignment: p. 280: 5-10 (a & b only) p. 285: 1, 2 TEST on T2.1a, T2.1c, T2.1d, T2.1e & T2.1f on (3 x 5 card, only) 2 WOW’s: Don’t major in minor things—let it go. Praise in public, criticize in private.
