Session 3: Building Missional Families
Pastor Benny Ho

Deuteronomy 6: 4 – 9 – “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”

The Word of God must be verbalized, visualized and actualized in our homes!

Psalm 78: 5 – 8 – “He decreed statures for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our forefathers to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.”

The home is meant to be the primary place where faith is nurtured, cultivated and grown.

Genesis 12: – “Abram travelled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. The LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your offspring I will give this land." So, he built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.”

Joshua 24: 2 – 13, Joshua recalled everything that God had done for them from the time of Abraham to their deliverance from Egypt to the crossing of the Jordan into the Promised Land. Joshua 24: 14 – “Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness…”

3 Attitudes for Serving God
Serve God Wholeheartedly Joshua 24: 14 – “Now fear the Lord and serve Him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshipped beyond the River and in Egypt and serve the Lord.”

Genesis 35: 2 – 5 – “So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes. 3 Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone.” 4 So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears, and Jacob buried them under the oak at Shechem. 5 Then they set out, and the terror of God fell on the towns all around them so that no one pursued them.”

Joshua 24: 19 – 21 – “Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord. He is a holy God; he is a jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins. If you forsake the Lord and serve other gods, he will turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you, after he has been good to you…”

Ephesians 6: 7 – “Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free.”

It is a privilege for us to serve!
You don’t have to serve; you get to serve!

The first sign of true wholehearted service is enthusiasm.

2 Chronicles 25: 2 – “He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord but not wholeheartedly.”

“The only really happy people are those who have learned how to serve
Albert Schweitzer

2. Serve God Willingly Joshua 24: 15 – “But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve…”

Psalm 100: 2 - “Serve the Lord with gladness…”

3. Serve God Decisively Joshua 24: 15 – “But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24: 26 – “And Joshua recorded these things in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up under the oak near the holy place of the Lord. “See!” he said to all the people, “This stone will be a witness against us. It has heard all the words the Lord has said to us. It will be a witness against you if you are untrue to your God.”
