Purpose: To make TSMs aware of the housing counseling assistance available through Housing and Urban Development(HUD). This subject is a three-fold: - Military Housing - Rental Property - HUD

Military Housing If you live in base housing you must arrange a time for the housing staff to come and perform a pre-inspection. Local Resource:

Rental Property: if you are moving from a rental property, notify the landlord. The Housing Office can assist you if any problems arise. SSCRA/SCRA: The Service Members Civil Relief Act (SCRA) protects active duty members of the armed forces. Protections include prohibitions against evicting military members and their dependents from rental or mortgaged property. Involuntary Separations: Individuals involuntary separated are authorized continued use of military family housing for up to 180 days* after separation on a space available basis, subject to Status of Forces Agreements overseas. Termination of Leases Another significant change provided in the SCRA, is found in Section The prior law only allowed the termination of pre-service “dwelling, professional, business, agricultural, or similar” leases. The new provision in the SCRA allows termination of leases by active duty servicemembers who subsequently receive orders for a permanent change of station (PCS) or a deployment for a period of 90 days or more.

Housing and Urban Developments (HUD)
The HUD Veteran Resource Center (HUDVET) has a wide variety of HUD homeless assistance programs and services for Veterans. HUDVET also helps with some of the tougher issues Veterans can encounter, such as combat- related domestic violence, runaway youth, and affordable housing for individuals with disabilities.
