2. 1st
King John has a problem with the Pope’s appointment of the Archbishop of England, so he says no to the appointment
The Pope issues an Interdict for ALL of England, it lasts 5 years.
Finally, King John needs the Church to help him battle his rivals, so he pays a huge sum of money and the Interdict is lifted.

3. 2nd Box
King John taxed the Nobles heavily to help finance his wars and pay his debt to the Church. This makes the Barons angry and they demand to meet with John in June of 1215.

4. 3rd Box
The Baron’s force King John to give up some of his power and sign the “Magna Carta.” This results in a Civil War between John and his Barons.
John dies during that time and his young son, Henry, is made King

5. 4th Box
The Barons continue to pressure Henry, and later his son, to keep following the Magna Carta.

6. The 5th Box
The Magna Carta is a document that spells out the shared powers of government and ensures that the King follows the law.
