Between 1914 and 1918 the majority of men went to fight during the First World War Many men died and this caused great sorrow and bitterness.

6 Rent Strikes!

7 Rent Strike Landlords raised there rents as more people came to the cities. Those tenants who could not pay were thrown out.

8 25,000 Glaswegians went on a rent strike, they refused to pay rent to the landlords

10 Reaction… The workers and tenants cant afford this raise
Independent Labour Party organised the rent strike Many of the strikers were against the war

11 Soldiers arrive home What effect would the soldiers returning home have on jobs?

12 40,000 workers went on General strike in Glasgow
They demanded a 40 hour working week They were worried that the huge number of soldiers returning home would lead to heavy unemployment. Huge demonstrations took place in Glasgow.
