Smokeless Tobacco 101
2
Smokeless tobacco is just that…tobacco products that are not smoked.

SNUS. Snus is tobacco in a bag, like a tea bag. You put the bag in your mouth just like regular dip, but this form of tobacco, snus is spitless. Thus it allows for the nicotine fix without spitting… it allows for one to further their addiction to nicotine.

ORBS Look at the packaging of this product, it almost looks like candy. To a young child this is a potential killer. In addition, a survey released in May by the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth found that one out of three teens surveyed incorrectly identified flavored tobacco as candy. Almost 40 percent of people younger than 18 surveyed identified Camel Orbs Fresh as mints or candy based on its packaging, and among respondents who did not currently use tobacco, 27 percent said they would try Orbs based on the packaging. DISSOLVABLE STICKS Another product that might be marketed toward youth. Any tobacco product with flavor is appealing to youth. Again a potential life threatening hazard to infants, young children and pets in the home.
6
DISSOLVABLE STRIPS Another example of a dissolvable new tobacco product. These are like the breath strips that simple dissolve on the tongue. All of the dissolvable nicotine products are designed so users can get their nicotine fix where they can’t smoke. There are up to 40 milligrams of nicotine in a cigarette, most of which burns off so the smoker only gets a few gram of nicotine. One pure drop of nicotine placed on the tongue of an adult would kill them… it’s that toxic, it’s that deadly.

E-cigarettes: E-cigarettes have gained in popularity in the U.S. over the last few years. There is no tobacco in an e-cigarette, however there is nicotine which we all know is the addictive substance in tobacco products. E-cigarette nicotine solution comes in over 90 different flavors and there are those who believe that is to attract youth to the product. The e-cigarette companies claim that the vapor produced from the e-cigs is just water vapor, but it has been proven that the vapor contains at least 10 toxic chemicals also present in cigarette smoke. The toxic chemicals include acetaldehyde, cadmium, lead, nickel, isoprene, toluene, nitrosonicotine, benzene, formaldehyde and nicotine…chemicals that cause cancer and birth defects. E-cigarettes have not been out long enough to do long term studies on the health effects of vapers and from the sidestream vap.

Spit tobacco… There is no safe form of commercial tobacco use due to the chemicals and additives that Big Tobacco puts into their products. Chewing tobacco and snuff contain higher levels of nicotine than cigarettes making it harder to quit than cigarettes. A tin of snuff delivers more nicotine than 60 cigarettes. 8-10 dips is equivalent to smoking cigarettes!

Why start? Role models Peer pressure Family To Look Older
Big Tobacco’s newest products…Since most states now have some form of law banning smoking indoors, like Arizona has the Smoke Free Arizona Act, the tobacco companies have had to come out with new products that could be used indoors in order keep people addicted to nicotine. You see what the tobacco companies really sell is nicotine addiction. Every product they sell contains nicotine which is the addictive substance in tobacco products. (Used in car batteries)
Many of the same ingredients and chemicals are in both cigarettes and smokeless tobacco. Just because there is 28 carcinogens rather than 69, doesn’t make smokeless tobacco any safer. On the contrary… As mentioned, there are over 3000 chemicals in smokeless tobacco, and 28 of those cause cancer. Nicotine, the addictive substance in tobacco products, is a carcinogen. So chemicals get into tobacco products in one of three ways. They are either in the tobacco plant naturally, the are in the fertilizers used by the tobacco farmers or they are added by the tobacco companies. POLONIUM 210 (Nuclear Waste) CADMIUM (Used in car batteries) HYDRAZINE (Toxic Chemical) SALT & SUGAR NAME YOUR POISON FORMALDEHYDE (Embalming Fluid) URANIUM 235 (Used in Nuclear Weapons) ARSENIC (Rat Poison) ABRASIVES 500 Ingredients 28 are CANCER CAUSING!

Curt Schilling Before After
Arguably one of the best pitchers in the modern era, Curt played 20 years in MLB with 6 teams most notably the Philadelphia Phillies, Arizona Diamondbacks and Boston Red Socks making All-Star 6 times. Curt won 3 World Series Championships, including one with the Diamondbacks. He had 216 wins and 146 losses in his career with 3116 strike-outs. Curt Schilling also dipped for 30 years, and he got oral cancer from it. “I do believe without a doubt, unquestionably that chewing is what gave me cancer and I’m not going to sit up here from the pedestal and preach about chewing. I will say this: I dipped for about 30 years. It was an addictive habit. I can think of so many times in my life when it was so relaxing to just sit back and have a dip and do whatever, and I lost my sense of smell, my taste buds for the most part. I had gum issues, they bled, all this other stuff. None of it was enough to ever make me quit. The pain that I was in going through this treatment, the second or third day it was the only thing in my life that had me wish I could go back and never have dipped. Not once. It was so painful.” Schilling lost 80 pounds during his radiation treatments… “This is my fault, I dipped for 30 years.” Before After Curt Schilling
