Caries Assessment Spectrum and Treatment (CAST)
Caries detection is fundamental to understanding the oral health status of a population Different instruments are available for epidemiological surveys ⟹ CAST CAST aims to provide relevant information by assessing a wider spectrum of the caries status than others instruments CAST CAST CAST CAST CAST CAST CAST CAST CAST 8
3
F = 0.25*CAST3 + 1*CAST4 + 2*CAST5 + 4*CAST6 + 5*CAST7 + 6*CAST8
Reporting Results Using CAST the caries prevalence calculation does not include restored and teeth missing due to caries CAST records a tooth with pulpal involved (Code 6) and with an abcess (Code 7) A population can be grouped in five stages of disease: healthy, pre- morbidity, morbidity, severe morbidity and mortality CAST codes are hierarchically ordered The severity level of dental caries can be calculated according to a formula which gives a progressively higher weight as the codes increase. It is called the CAST severity score F = 0.25*CAST3 + 1*CAST4 + 2*CAST5 + 4*CAST6 + 5*CAST7 + 6*CAST8

e-Charting Platform It’s a cloud-based-platform in which statistics are automatically processed AIM: To assess oral health of a population by charting patients in the cloud, by automatically calculating their individual severity codes and by automatically generating severity statistics.
5
Methodology Oral health data from an epidemiological surveys (680 school children) carried out in 2 schools in Brasília, Brazil were used The original data were collected by paper and manually entered into a database. Data were handled by a biostatistician The same oral health data were entred into na e-charting programme that is available in the cloud.
6
Results Results manual database Results e-Charting
Low CASTseverity score 0 – 1.25 34.1% Moderate CAST severity score 1,5 – 6.75 29,5% Severe CAST severity score > 6.75 36.4% Low CAST severity score 0 – 1.25 35.1% Moderate 1,5 – 6.75 31.5% Severe CAST severity score > 6.75 33.4% A small insignificant difference between manual and paperless (e-Charting) was present in each of the categories
7
Conclusion DentalCharting appears to be a reliable tool which significantly speeds up data collection, data processing and data analysis in oral health surveys in the absence of paper records
