HOW EFFECTIVELY DID THE LEAGUE DEAL WITH THE MANCHURIAN CRISIS? L/O: To evaluate the actions of the League in the 1930s

(1) Watch the short documentary (2) Add to your own notes or do notes as follows: (i) Where and when did the crisis take place? (ii) What happened? (iii) What did the League do? (iiii) Why was it significant? ~(i) Why Launched ? ~(ii) Why do you think the Allies did not choose the usual Dover to Calais crossing? ? ~ (iii) Why was capturing the bridges important? ~(iv) Overall strategy?

8 SUMMARY OF EVENTS In 1931 the Japanese army invaded Manchuria, a northern province of China. A year later the League conducted an enquiry into this attack on China. A report was written by Lord Lytton, a British diplomat Japan was asked to leave Manchuria but ignored the League and continued their invasion into China. Japan left the League This was the first real test for the League and set a dangerous precedent (a guide to what would happen in similar circumstances)

Read through the consequences of the Manchurian incident. Answer questions 1 and 2 on page 41

14 EXTRACT FROM AUSTEN CHAMBERLAIN’S LETTERS, 1932
‘I was sad to find everyone {at the League} so dejected. The assembly was a dead thing. The council was without confidence in itself. Benes (the Czechoslovak leader) who was not given to hysterics, said (about the people in the League) ‘ They are too frightened. I tell them we are not going to have war now; we have five years before us, maybe six. We must make the most of them’
