2 Icons Greek for “images”
Small paintings depicting Christ, the Virgin, saints, or combination of all three Used for instruction or inspiration, treated as sacred objects of worship, or simply applied as ornament Early icons were important in helping establish a relationship with holy figures. Few early icons survive because of iconoclasm (the mass destruction of images)

3 Iconoclasm – 8th century
Many Christians were suspicious of the practice of making icons “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven images or any likeness of anything this is in heaven above. . .” (Exodus 20:4.5) In the minds of many, icons became identified as the figures they represented
