1 Why “Squiggles” are Important
Chapter 4: Cells and Energy Why surface area is important. Why “Squiggles” are Important

2 Finish ATP Modeling Lab “Why Squiggles are Important” Activity
Chapter 4: Cells and Energy Why surface area is important. Agenda Do Now! Finish ATP Modeling Lab “Why Squiggles are Important” Activity Complete classwork, SG 4.2

3 Chapter 4: Cells and Energy
Why surface area is important. Do Now! A farmer challenges an engineer, a physicist, and a mathematician to fence off the largest amount of area using the least amount of fence. The engineer made his fence in a circle and said it was the most efficient. The physicist made a long line and said that the length was infinite. Then he said that fencing half of the Earth was the best. The mathematician laughed at the others and with his design, beat the others. What did he do?

4 Chapter 4: Cells and Energy
Why surface area is important. The mathematician made a small fence around himself and declared himself to be on the outside.

5 Chapter 4: Cells and Energy
Why surface area is important.

6 Take sheet of paper, make lasagna fold
Chapter 4: Cells and Energy Why surface area is important. Step One: Take sheet of paper, make lasagna fold

7 Step Two: Label the outside: Outside cover->
Chapter 4: Cells and Energy Why surface area is important. Step Two: Label the outside: Outside cover->

8 Step Three: Label the inside: Chapter 4: Cells and Energy
Why surface area is important. Step Three: Label the inside:

9 Cut out your Organelles:
Chapter 4: Cells and Energy Why surface area is important. Step Four: Cut out your Organelles:

10 Put your organelles inside your cell. Oh no! Are they able to fit?
Chapter 4: Cells and Energy Why surface area is important. Step Five: Put your organelles inside your cell. Oh no! Are they able to fit?

11 What can you do? Figure it out!
Chapter 4: Cells and Energy Why surface area is important. Step Six: What can you do? Figure it out!

12 Step Six: Rough ER makes proteins Smooth ER makes lipids
Chapter 4: Cells and Energy Why surface area is important. Step Six: Rough ER makes proteins Smooth ER makes lipids Chloroplast makes sugar (food) Mitochondria makes ATP from ADP All of these factories need space to make their products! FOLDING increases surface area (increases the size of the factory floor)

13 This is how your brain works!
Chapter 4: Cells and Energy Why surface area is important. This is how your brain works!

14 Save your foldable in your Biology notebook!
Chapter 4: Cells and Energy Why surface area is important. Step Seven: Take your folded organelle, and glue it on to the appropriate space on your foldable. Save your foldable in your Biology notebook! We will be using these over the next couple weeks.
