1 Dimensioning with SolidWorks - Demo
Although most demos are implemented with word documents, this demo employs slides so that more details can be shown to the students as the drawing is constructed. Part 1 Since Dimensioning is one of the more difficult concepts introduced in 1182, the resulting dimensioned file produced by this instructor led DEMO is not recommended as an optional in class assignment since the student will benefit by doing the in class assignment on the EEIC website on their own. Rev: RCB Dimensioning in SolidWorks

2 Dimensioning in SolidWorks
Formal Drawings Definition: Detailed multi-view representations of a finished part Formal Drawing Components: Extracted Drawings Extracted Views Detailed Features Title Block Dimensions Size and Type of Features Rev: , AJP Dimensioning in SolidWorks

3 Dimensioning in SolidWorks
Basic Dimensioning Dimensioning is used to define an object so that it could be manufactured and must: Define the overall size of the part in all 3 dimensions. Define the size and location of the features of the part in all 3 dimensions. Rev: , AJP Dimensioning in SolidWorks

4 Basic Dimensioning 2 2 Overall Size Features Size and Location 1 2 2
.75 .75 2 2 Overall Size Features Size and Location .25 1 2 2 Rev: , AJP Dimensioning in SolidWorks

5 Basic Dimensioning Arcs and Circles
.5 .5 Overall Size Features Size and Location 1 1 R1 R1 Ø1 Rev: , AJP Dimensioning in SolidWorks

6 Baseline versus Chain Dimensioning
There are many ways to use dimensions to locate features. Chain Baseline (Both techniques are acceptable, however baseline dimensions are preferred.) Chain Dimensioning Baseline Dimensioning Rev: , AJP Dimensioning in SolidWorks

7 SolidWorks: Adding Dimensions, Center Marks and Center Lines
Dimensions can be added using the “Smart Dimension” feature Notes can be added to reduce the number of dimensions by stating symmetry or identifying fillet radii Note that sometimes the Isometric needs to be re-scaled to allow adequate drawing space which requires a NOTE. Notes can be used to describe Symmetry or radii of curvature, etc. Rev: RCB Dimensioning in SolidWorks

8 Opening the Drawing for Dimensioning
Open Dimensioning_Demo.SLDPRT & SLDDRW from the SolidWorks 8 EEIC website as shown above.bsitSolidWork-7 EEIC Rev: RCB Dimensioning in SolidWorks

9 Setting the Dimensioning Precision
Tools / Options Since the drawing we are dimensioning is in INCHES, 2 numbers to the right of the decimal point are sufficient for this drawing. Click OK to save. Rev: RCB Dimensioning in SolidWorks

10 Dimensioning in SolidWorks
Establish the Overall Size (Height, Width & Depth) using Smart Dimension Width Depth IMPORTANT Usually one dimensions between center points of circles in a symmetrical object Height Rev: RCB Dimensioning in SolidWorks

11 Size and Locate the Holes
Note that the location has already been established by the Symmetry note and the hole center point separation  8 inches Using SYMMETRY simplifies: Construction & Dimensioning Rev: RCB Dimensioning in SolidWorks

12 Size and Locate the Other Features
Note that the following Dimensioning Guidelines have been followed: Dimensions are located in the "Characteristic View" Positive cylinders are dimensioned where they appear as rectangles Negative cylinders are dimensioned where they appear as circles Dimensions are generally located between Orthographic Views Object is not OVER DIMENSIONED (no more dimensions allowed!) Note that since dimensioning is one of the more difficult exercises, it is NOT recommended that the completed dimensioned drawing be optionally submitted for the in-class assignment. The provided in-class assignment provides the needed student practice in dimensioning. Rev: RCB Dimensioning in SolidWorks

13 The Dimensioning Guidelines
Very Important Rev: , AJP Dimensioning in SolidWorks

14 Dimensioning in SolidWorks
Dimensioning Wrap Up Homework Assignment Problem 6.4 (qq) Model part and create 2D Drawings with all necessary formatting (dimension in next class) Rules of Dimensioning Overall size in all 3 dimensions Size and location of all features in all 3 views always using a features CHARACTERISTIC VIEW Note that these dimensions do not reference the BOTTOM of the object CAUTION: Do not add high-lighted fillets in order to eliminate difficulty in dimensioning. Rev: , AJP Dimensioning in SolidWorks

15 Two Options for Out of Class Home Work
Want to reduce your construction effort ? Consider MIRRORING! Option 1 Option 2 Rev: , AJP Dimensioning in SolidWorks

16 In-Class Assignment Open the following document:
“Dimensioning Part 1-InClass Assignment” and add dimensions to the following 4 shapes. Rev: , AJP Dimensioning in SolidWorks
