2 Learning Objectives S.ID.4 Use the mean and standard deviation of a data set to fit it to a normal distribution and to estimate population percentages. Recognize that there are data sets for which such a procedure is not appropriate. Use calculators, spreadsheets, and tables to estimate areas under the normal curve. S.IC.1 Understand that statistics allows inferences to be made about population parameters based on a random sample from that population. 38 Glossary Population Mean – average value for the parameter of the WHOLE population. Expressed as “ “ Population Proportion – point estimate (single value) or as an interval (range of values) Ex: 80% of residents prefer “A” or 75% to 85% of residents prefer “A” “Sample Estimate” Margin of Error – because population proportion is only an estimate of the mu, we need to know how goof our estimate actually is. This has to do with sample size, sample standard deviation, and sample proportion generally these are done with a 95% confidence interval. In other words if 95/100 sample surveys were taken our result would be within our interval. Confidence interval: sample estimate ±𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑖𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝑒𝑟𝑟𝑜𝑟. Inferences and Conclusions from Data
