2 How Geographers Think When geographers work, they are guided by two basic questions: 1. Where are things located? 2. Why are they there?

To find the answers to these questions, geographers use five themes to organize information Five Themes of Geography

4 location Where a place is found. There are two types:
1. Absolute location – Latitude and longitude ex. 40° N, 60°E or an address ex Rufe Snow Drive, North Richland Hills TX, 76180 2. Relative location – uses landmarks. Ex. Go down two blocks and turn right at the chick fil-a. Mr. Osborn is next to the door.

5 Place What is it like there? Includes things like: Language
Type of food Climate landforms How people dress Describe what you see

6 Human environment interaction
All of the ways people affect the environment, and the ways that the environment impacts human life and society. Building Dams Floods Building roads, cities, bridges, etc. Earthquakes volcanoes Human environment interaction

7 Explains how people, goods, ideas, and diseases move from one place to another.
How do ideas get around? Phone, talking, letters, technology People – walking, car, train, subway, plane Movement

8 A region has an unifying characteristic, like climate, land, population, or history.
Example - DFW, Southwest United States, the Middle East, Etc. Region
