2. Sort the events onto the timeline using the book (page 100-101)

An operation was launched to capture Moscow
Law and order broke down as the people of Moscow panicked, as they heard that the Germans had captured the city.
General Zhukov launched a counter attack.
He successfully pushed the Germans back 200km from Moscow
Hitler launched this operation in 1942, aiming to capture Stalingrad. He hoped this would deprive the USSR of an important industrial base as well as being an enormous propaganda victory. The battle of Stalingrad lasted for 6 months and was one of the bloodiest battles in history.
Over 1.9 million people dies during the siege but the Russians continued to resist.
By this time Stalin had managed to recapture two thirds of the territory that had been occupied by the Germans. This included Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
The Red Army entered German territory. The Russian soldiers tried to get revenge for the previous years of Nazi invasion.
There were numerous accounts of rape and murder in villages throughout Germany
Stalin mobilised the whole of the Soviet Union, determined that they would not lose Leningrad, Stalingrad or Moscow.
The main counter-offensive was launched in September By February the Germans had been driven out of Stalingrad at the cost of 1.1 million Russian lives.
4,000 Red Army soldiers reached the outskirts of Berlin by February and the Germans surrendered to the Allies in May.
