Describing Energy
2
What is Energy? Energy is the ability to cause change. or….. The ability to do work. Energy is measured in the same units (Joules) as work because energy transfers work.
3
Different Forms of Energy
Chemical potential energy Electrical energy Radiant energy
4
Types of Energy Kinetic Energy: the energy due to motion.
Kinetic energy (J) = ½ x mass (kg) x [speed (m/s)]2
5
Calculating Kinetic Energy
Example 1: A baseball with a mass of 0.15 kg is moving at a speed of 40.0 m/s. What is the baseball’s kinetic energy from this motion? 120 J Example 2: A jogger with a mass of 60 kg is moving forward at a speed of 3.0 m/s. What is the jogger’s kinetic energy? 270 J
6
Types of Energy Potential: the energy that is stored due to the interactions between objects. 3 Types: Chemical: energy due to chemical bonds Elastic: energy that is stored by compressing or stretching an object. Gravitational: energy that is due to the gravitational forces between objects
7
Calculating GPE Gravitational Potential Energy equation: GPE (J) = mass (kg) x Gravity (N/kg) x height (m) Example: A 4.0 kg ceiling fan is placed 2.5 m above the floor. What is the gravitational potential energy of the Earth-ceiling fan system? 98 J
