4 What did he do as a senator?
Robert La Follette Pearl Harbor John L. Lewis First Term 1950 Edmund Walsh Joseph McCarthy ran against Robert La Follette for senate. McCarthy won by 5,000 votes, and La Follette was deeply hurt by losing the election and retired from politics and later committed suicide. During the bombing of pearl harbor, McCarthy was too old to join the armed forces McCarthy called a conference to fix the coal strike, so he called John L. Lewis and mine strikers to be drafted to the army. If men refused to mine he suggested they should be court-martialed for insubordination and shot. Joseph’s first term was unimpressive, people claimed that he lied about his war record He was being investigated for tax offences and also for taking bribes from the Pepsi-Cola Company In 1950, he held a meeting with close advisors for advice on how to keep his seat for the next election Edmund Walsh told him to begin a campaign against communist subversives working in the Democratic administrations

5 McCarthy’s Downfall President Eisenhower June 1953 Final Days
December 2 His career was never great, Republicans withdrew their support for him because he was hurting the presidential administration. President Eisenhower didn’t want to publicly reprimand McCarthy. J.B Matthews was appointed to be McCarthy’s research director in June 1953. Matthews published an article called “Reds in our Churches” he referred to the Protestant Clergy as “the largest single group supporting the Communist apparatus in the U.S.” which caused a public outrage. His final days resulted in him being driven to depression from being censured on December 2, he drank a lot and died on May 2.

6 McCarthyism Problems Communist sympathizers Trials Being blacklisted
Press 1954 The hunt for infiltrators was difficult for writers and entertainers since they were labeled communist sympathizers and weren’t able to continue working. Some had to give up their passports and some had to go to jail for not giving the names of other communists. Trials were publicized, and it often destroyed careers with a single unsubstantiated accusation. 320 artists were blacklisted, this meant the end of their promising careers. The press were willing to stand against McCarthy and the anti communist machine. In 1954, all of this died down and actors and writers got their jobs back.
