1 How Good and how pleasant
Psalm 133

2 Another psalm of ascents (120-134)
A psalm of David He is one who have understood the bitterness of division and the pleasantness of unity

3 How Good and pleasant Good – having desirable and pleasant qualities, Genesis 1:10, cf. Matthew 19:17, Romans 5:7 Pleasant – that which brings pleasure because it is acceptable Psalm 134:3, 147:1

4 How Good and pleasant We appreciate that which is good and pleasant.
Many things are good OR pleasant Fewer things are both – Do we meditate on things that are pleasant? Philippians 4:8, Galatians 5:22-23, James 3:17-18 Godly unity is good and pleasant

5 For brethren to dwell… Division is plentiful in scripture – Cain & Abel, Jacob & Esau, Saul & David, Israel and Judah Unity is a goal to be achieved, John 13:34-35, Ephesians 4:1-3, John 17:20-21

6 For brethren to dwell… We are brethren – Ephesians 4:16, Romans 12:4-5, cf. Genesis 13:7 The feasts were intended to bring the brethren of Israel together. A time to worship God in unison. Our worship is intended to bring us together. Being united makes worship pleasant.

7 Like precious oil Like precious oil upon the head of Aaron – Exodus 29:7, Leviticus 8:12 Such ceremonies were typically joyful and times of peace and harmony Also, through the sacrifices of the priests, sins were forgiven and unity was produced between God and the nation!

8 Like precious oil There is a preciousness in knowing our sins are forgiven – Romans 4:7, Ephesians 1:3, 7 1 John 2:12, “because your sins are forgiven you for His name’s sake”

9 Like the dew of hermon Hermon, a mountain at the northern border of Israel. A source of refreshing (in some way) even for Zion (Jerusalem) Dew of Hermon – I think of the pleasantness of a quiet morning in a country valley

10 Like the dew of hermon True unity gives us this type of peace and tranquility. There is a pleasantness when brethren agree and are glad to see one another When we are TRULY the body of Christ, we anticipate coming together

11 The Lord commanded blessing
He commanded this – 1) A command to seek unity – cf. 1 Corinthians 1:10 2) He is willing it to be accomplished – cf. Jeremiah 32:27, Luke 18:27, Hebrews 11:3, 2 Peter 3:5-7

12 The Lord commanded blessing
He commanded the blessing – that which endues us with power for success, prosperity and longevity (cf. TWOT) He commands us to seek unity, but it is not without blessing.

13 The Lord commanded blessing
Live forevermore – this is the ultimate blessing of unity Their hope of eternal life – Psalm 16:11, 23:6 OUR hope of eternal life – 1 John 2:25, Philippians 3: Our citizenship – Phil. 3:20, 2 Timothy 4:6-8

14 The Lord commanded blessing
Live forevermore – this is the ultimate blessing of unity Let us not jeopardize our eternity because we are not united – cf. 1 John 4:20-21, 3:14-15 – no murderer has eternal life abiding in him cf. Matthew 5:22

15 How precious are my brethren to me?
