Engineering breakthroughs
What do pointed arches create/allow? Who is building these? How is sculpture evolving? Because of who? What is different about tapestries than other 2-D medieval art?

Salisbury Cathedral – Britain “Salisbury Cathedral exists for the glory of God and as a sign of his kingdom in the world.” Salisbury is one of the finest medieval cathedrals in Britain. It is the mother church of the Salisbury Diocese, an area which covers most of the counties of Wiltshire and Dorset. Started in 1220 it was completed by 1258, with the Spire, the tallest in England (123m/404ft) added a generation later.

Bay

Nave. To the west of the center crossing the nave is composed of ten tall bays (39 feet by 19 feet 6 inches) down the center. These are flanked on the north and south by ten shorter, square bays (19 feet 6 inches) that form side aisles.

Choir and Presbytery . To the east is the choir and presbytery composed of seven tall bays (these vary in length) flanked by shorter ones for aisles. The choir is a place of singing; the presbytery is the place of priests who perform the religious services at the main altar.

Transepts two transepts extending north and south and marking divisions within the building. The western transept separates the nave from the choir; the eastern transept divides the choir from the presbytery.

East Bay End The furthest bay to the east at the end of the north and south aisles functions as a chapel.

Trinity Chapel Still further to the east is a chapel composed of three bays with very small bays on the north and south sides, all of which are vaulted at the same height as the aisles.

To counteract the thrust and stabilize the wall, the exterior walls are thickened at this point with a structural element called a buttress. Beneath the aisle roofs is a quadrant arch (like a “flying” buttress but hidden from view) that abuts the clerestory wall to counteract the outward thrust from the high vaults.
