Last lesson you travelled by plane from London to Hong Kong.
In this lesson you will:
plan a route though Hong Kong, from the airport on Lantau Island to James’s house on Lamma Island.
Write a postcard home describing your journey and the place where James lives.
consider different modes of transport
This will help you to:
Learn more about what it is like to live in Hong Kong and the geography of the city region.

3. How are you going to get to Lamma Island?
Can you see the airport island on the map, north of Lantau Island. You now have to get to Central on Hong Kong Island and then to Lamma Island. How are you going to get there do you think?

4. 1. Getting From Lantau Island to Central on Hong Kong Island
Find Central on the map. Which transport would you choose and why? These are your choices to get to Central. You can see the cost and the time taken.

5. Ferry 2. Getting to Lamma Island
You have arrived at Central, Hong Kong Island. The airport express train is underground on Hong Kong Island and you come up a lift and it is a hot sunny day. If you have to go to Lamma Island – how will you travel there? By bus? By taxi?

6. The Star Ferry takes you to Kowloon – Is that the right one?
This is the Star Ferry. Why might is be called that? Each ferry is called something Star. This one is Morning Star. What words go with Star and do you think they all have names like that?
In the background is the International Commerce Centre, the ICC, the tallest building in Hong Kong. It has 108 floors and is 484 metres tall.

7. This is the view from the ferry pier
This is the view from the ferry pier. Could you get to Lamma Island on these boats?
This is the view from the Ferry Pier looking over to Kowloon. The ‘junk’ boat is for tourists to enjoy the harbour views. The white speed boat is privately owned. Could you get to Lamma Island on these boats? (No, you need a ferry).

8. Now you will cross Hong Kong harbour What do you see here?
The Harbour – a tug boat tows a barge past Kowloon.

9. Now you will cross the Lamma Channel – one of the busiest sea lanes in the world

The Lamma Channel – very busy with big ships

10. You get off the ferry and walk down the jetty looking for James.
How are you feeling?
There are no cars on Lamma Island, how could you reach James’s house?
What do you notice about the way children are dressed? Why are people carrying umbrellas? What must you do when the weather is so hot?

Note: there are no cars on Lamma Island but these motorised trucks are used to move small amounts of goods around.
Lamma also has a power station which generates electricity for Hong Kong Island.
