2 5th Grade Lesson Standard 5-6: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the political, social, economic, and environmental challenges faced by the United States during the period from the collapse of the Soviet Union. Indicator: 5-6.3 Explain the impact of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the home-front response to terrorism are new for 5th grade students.

4 Maya Lin Vietnam Veterans Memorial
Maya Ying Lin is an American architectural designer and artist. She attended Yale University.

5 Michael Ard 9/11 Memorial Worked as New York Housing Authority architect before winning the competition to design the Memorial. He earned a master’ degree in architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1999. He is a native of Israel

6 Vocabulary Hero: remarkably brave person
Primary colors: red, yellow and blue Secondary colors: made from mixing two primary colors. The secondary colors are orange, purple/violet, and green. Intermediate (or tertiary) colors: made from mixing a primary color with a secondary color. The intermediate colors are yellow-orange, red-orange, red-violet, blue-violet, yellow-green, green-blue. Complimentary colors: appear opposite from one another on the color wheel. The complimentary colors are red and green, blue and orange, yellow and purple. Analogous colors: colors that are next to each other on the color wheel (example: red, red-orange, orange) Warm colors: yellow, orange, red; give the feeling of warmth Cool colors: green, blue, purple; give the feeling of coolness Tint: combination of white and a color to make the color lighter Shade: adding black to a color to make it darker Positive space: the space occupied by the object being looked at Negative space: the space between an object, around an object, but not part of the actual object itself Composition: the way an artist organizes and places the art elements Hero: remarkably brave person Memorial: something that is intended to remind people of a object or event. Twin Towers: twin skyscrapers 110 stories high in New York City; built 1368 feet tall in 1970 to 1973; destroyed by a terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. Terrorism: somebody using violence to intimidate others, often for political or religious purposes. Al Qaeda: Islamic fundamentalist based un Afghanistan that has led several terrorist incidents. Osama bin Laden: established and led the terrorist group known as Al Qaeda. Taliban: a strict Islamic group that ruled Afghanistan from Homeland Security: a federal department that administers all matters relating to homeland security; was put into place by George W. Bush .
