3 Background of the CSU African-American Initiative
Town Hall meeting – coordinated by Dr. Barbara Young, Consultant. Venue – largest church in Southern California. Co-hosts – Chancellor Charles Reed and Bishop Charles Blake. Partnership formed in 2005. Action Plan developed to increase the enrollment of African American students within the CSU. Development of outreach to African American churches – Dr. Barbara Young. 5 Quarterly Church Partners Meetings
Overall Objective: To strengthen the partnership between the churches and the Higher Education System. Each church pastor participating in a Super Sunday is invited to designate a church liaison(s) to represent the church in regularly scheduled meetings with Higher Education staff, and other designated professionals. The establishment of church liaisons is important to the overall success and sustainment of the Higher Education Community Outreach Effort. Young Enterprises AAI Planning Guidelines

6 Quarterly Church Partners Meetings
Goals To discuss the goals and future direction beyond Super Sundays. To discuss and plan attendant follow-up activities to support and facilitate early preparation of students in the churches. To share “best” practices within the participating churches to promote and advance the goals of the University system. To plan how to involve higher education alums in supporting the overall Initiative(s) of the system. To help educate church liaisons on policies and future directions of the KTCS system Empower church liaisons as Ambassadors for the KTCS, Allows a church member to interact and meet with the administrators, staff and other professionals in the system that generates good will and sustained interest in the endeavor. To plan and discuss ways to engage other churches, partners in the community, key legislators, and political members of the city in the efforts of the University system to reach more diverse students within the community/city. 7 Breakfast with the Chancellor/Presidents/Church Pastors
Overall Objective: To strengthen the partnership between the churches and the Higher Education System at the highest levels and further demonstrate the level of commitment from the System. Each Participating Pastor in Super Sunday Events is invited to attend a Breakfast with the Chancellor and the campus Presidents. Venue is on one of the campuses. 8 Breakfast with the Chancellor/Presidents/Church Pastors
Goals: To discuss the goals and future direction beyond Super Sundays. To dialogue around the challenges and opportunities to increase the participations of African American students. To learn about each individual campus practice as it relates to underserved students and degree program offerings. Help to work together in developing methods for evaluating the success of the effort. To empower the pastors as Ambassadors for the University System. To discuss and plan attendant follow-up activities to support and facilitate early preparation of students in the churches. To share “best” practices within the participating churches to promote and increase the enrollment of African American students. To plan how to involve higher education church alums in supporting the overall Initiative(s) of the system. To share with church pastors concerns, and/or policies and future directions of the Higher Education System. Young Enterprises AAI Planning Guidelines

10 Train-the-Trainer Plan: An Empowerment Educational Program for Churches
Objective: To train education advisers and education ministry representatives from partner churches on the following information: KTCS admissions the application process financial aid and scholarships training/support to implement a model parent involvement program in their respective churches Young Enterprises AAI Planning Guidelines

11 Train-the-Trainer Plan: An Empowerment Educational Program for Churches
Each Church is asked to implement a Parent/Education Night using Campus Resource Personnel as Supporters! Establishment of Church Partners’ Meeting Brainstorm the needs of the Partners to have representatives attend Training Sessions and determine what is needed for training. Decide WHO will “host” the Event and Serve as the Lead Coordinator. Develop a Task Force Committee of Campus Staff, Admissions, Financial Aid, and other Student Services Professionals to discuss how services will be delivered. Involve Church Partners, KTCS Alumni, Volunteers, and Education Ministry Teams. Develop a venue for the event. Develop a budget – (Materials, Handouts, Flyers, Food, etc) Make this an annual event soon after the Super Sunday – Can advertise it on Super Sunday. 13 Super Saturday Plan Provide Prizes/Food/Entertainment (Food vendors)
Develop a Task Force Committee to Plan Super Saturday Involve Church Partners and other Community Partners Develop a Budget for the Event Involve Campus Recruiters/Outreach/Staff and Alumni – Make this a Community/Campus System Event. Suggest Marketing Committee be established (Volunteers)  Recruit Volunteers from campuses Committee will plan Effective Workshops that address the needs of the targeted community. Recruit Dynamic and Effective Speakers (campus & community) Provide Prizes/Food/Entertainment (Food vendors) Transportation needed – Seek help from Churches, Donors Seek Funders/Donors to support the Endeavor Find Venue that will handle free parking Involve all the campuses – invite K-12 parents/students Market to all the K-12 schools Pick time of the year in accordance with schools’ calendars. 14 Parent Councils: (newly established – 3/2012)
Establishment of Parent Councils as an ancillary effort under the CSU African American Initiative (CSUAAI) to increase parental involvement! Rationale: A focused effort with the establishment of Parent Councils within each church will help to facilitate and promote a more significant contribution to student academic achievement of African American students and help to further the goals of the CSUAAI to recruit, enroll, retain and graduate more African American students. 15 Parent Councils: Mission: To empower parents as partners to participate in their child’s learning and preparation for post-secondary education. Goals: Help parents become “full partners” in their child’s education; Build the capacity of parents to participate in their child’s learning; Help parents better grasp state and local standards; Provide opportunities for involvement among parents with limited English skills or disabilities; and Provide materials and training to help parents promote learning at home. CSU has formed a partnership with the College Board and who will provide training personnel and materials for parent training sessions (2 to be conducted in October) with Parent Training Representatives at the Train the Trainer Sessions. 16 Recommendations: Higher Education / Church Partnerships Establishment of Roles and Responsibilities
Higher Ed Will….. Conduct Super Sunday visits. Host annual Super Saturday College Fair. Host Quarterly Meetings for Church Partners. Host annual Breakfast with Chancellor/Presidents and Church Pastors/Bishops. Provide information to Church Education Advisors at the Train-the-Trainer Workshops. Provide updated list of Outreach Contacts. Provide an updated list of African American Initiative Church Partners. Young Enterprises AAI Planning Guidelines

17 Recommendations: Higher Education / Church Partnerships Church Partners Invited To:
Designate church liaison to participate in quarterly meetings. Host a speaker and outreach staff for Super Sunday. Designate a lead contact to work with Super Sunday and Super Saturday College Fair. Designate a church representative and facilitate attendance at a Train- the-Trainer Workshop. Commit to bringing parents and students to Super Saturday College Fair. Host educational sessions for parents and students at their church site. Maintain Education/College Resource space at the church. Send representatives to attend Quarterly Church Partner Meetings. **Provide a list of high school juniors who wish to attend a KCTCS campus. Young Enterprises AAI Planning Guidelines

19 Recommendations: Appointment of Lead Coordinator for the “overall” Initiative and a Church Partner Representative. 1 Develop Role Clarification: duties & expectation from both partners! 2 Establish formal signed “Agreements” with Churches/Campuses/System. 3 Young Enterprises AAI Planning Guidelines

20 Recommendations: Develop guidelines for inclusion of additional churches – growth plan. 4 Each church is to select a person(s) from Youth Ministry, Education Ministry, Scholarship Committee, etc., to work with the KCTCS System Coordinator. *Recommend 2 persons. 5 Establish meeting time periods: quarterly, venue, day of the week and time. 6 Young Enterprises AAI Planning Guidelines

21 Recommendations: Establish a Media/Website Manager for advertising and marketing of events. 7 System Coordinator should establish committees from churches and campuses for Super Saturday College Fair, Train-the-Trainer, Parent Councils, and lead person to work with the annual Breakfast with the Chancellor/Presidents. 8 Establish volunteers from campus student services staff. 9 Young Enterprises AAI Planning Guidelines
