3 A few reminders… Prepare yourselves now!!! 
*Friday, Sept 2nd is the last day to submit a schedule change request. No elective changes, no lunch change requests. *The next opportunity to drop a PreAP or AP will be at the end of the 1st six weeks. There will be a form to complete that requires several signatures and a conference with Dr. Waters, Associate Principal. *Please take a look at HAC and note your 2nd semester schedule. If you are in a one semester class, you MAY have a different schedule in the Spring. This happens when electives don’t pair up in the same period. Your full year classes should have the same teachers, but possibly in a new period. Some of you may also have a new lunch period in the 2nd semester. Prepare yourselves now!!! 

4 Important things to know for a great high school experience!

5 Grade Level 10th Grade= 6 credits (Sophomore)
11th Grade=13 Credits (Junior) 12th Grade = 19 Credits (Senior) HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE= 26 Credits

6 Credits In high school, credits are earned by PASSING classes with a grade of 70 or above. The High School Transcript is where credits are recorded each semester. You must attend class to receive credits earned.

7 Speaking of Attendance……
AGAIN….. Students must attend a class in order to receive credit. Credit is granted or denied every semester.

8 GPA (Grade Point Average)
Northwest ISD determines both an un-weighted GPA (4.0 scale) and a weighted GPA (7.0 scale). GPA uses semester averages. The unweighted GPA uses all of your courses. The weighted GPA is used in determining class rank. Courses that are included are all core and foreign language. This also includes any electives in those areas. Advanced Placement (AP), Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP), and Dual Credit courses contain weighted points for ranking. GPA Exempt Courses (Don’t count in your GPA) -Correspondence -Credit By Exams -Summer School for remediation

9 Class Rank Class rank is determined by using the weighted GPA.
Weighted GPA-Courses receive different grade points based on level of difficulty of class -On Level Courses max grade point is 5.0 -Pre/AP and Dual credit courses max grade point is 6.0 -AP Courses max grade point is 7.0 You get a new class rank at the end of each semester!!

10 GPA Scale 90 in an on level class is 4.0 points 90 in a PreAP is 5.0 points 90 in an AP course is 6.0 points *scale available in NISD grading guidelines

11 Transcript Your High School Transcript is a copy of your permanent academic record. This includes all courses you have taken, all grades received, and all credits earned. Your GPA and class rank are also on your transcript.

15 Tips for Being Successful in High School and Reducing STRESS!
Get Organized. Manage Your time well Be a Model Student in class (be on time, pay attention) Take good notes in class Study smart Use test-taking strategies Reduce test anxiety Ask for help when you need it Believe in yourself!

16 One more tip !!!! Studies show that being involved in extracurriculars increases achievement in high school and can make you a better candidate for scholarships!

18 It’s never too early to start planning for your future!
Continue to take challenging courses! Start a resume of your activities, awards and community service. This will come in handy when completing applications. Take the PSAT-all students will test at Eaton on Oct. 19 Start your college search – Naviance is a great tool. Info available on the Counseling page. Campus visits. Juniors/Seniors are allowed two days each year for campus visits. Must bring back proof from the school Juniors should begin taking the SAT/ACT in early Spring. This will allow you time for retaking if needed. College admissions for some schools can begin in the summer before your Senior year. Need money for college? There are many scholarship sites to search and all students should complete a FAFSA. FAFSA- Free Application for Federal Student Aid More info to come…

19 JUNIORS!!! **This year’s cumulative GPA and rank will be what you report on your initial college applications. MAKE IT YOUR BEST YEAR YET!

Wanting to play college sports? Register with the NCAA eligibility center. Eaton should be approved very soon!

21 Learn About Honor Cords
Green Cord – Community Service Award Program The program is a way to encourage students in grades 9-12 to contribute at least 100 hours of approved community service per school year. Students can be recognized for all four years. During your senior year, graduates will have the option to purchase a “Green Cord” for each year of achievement to proudly wear during the high school graduation ceremony. There will be many other cords for Seniors to purchase for Academic honors.

Dates TBD *Eagle Time presentations covering a variety of topics, such as financial aid, study skills, scholarships, etc.

23 G-Force G-Force is a group of students from UNT who are here to help anyone make plans for after high school. They can help you apply to college, trade school, or any type of career searching. G-Force will help you find the money and resources to go. You do not have to apply to UNT to get help. They also do classroom presentations, work with parents, provide academic tutoring and student mentoring. G-Force will be here every other Tuesday from 9-11:30 in the Go Center. If you are interested in meeting with G-Force, please submit a request form on the Eaton Counseling page.
