1 If holidays were a colour, which colour would they be and why?
Greeting task to get pupils thinking as they come into the lesson. Take feedback, ensure they give reasons for their answers. Next, ask them about different types of holidays. If they don’t mention cruises, ask if they know what they are.

11 What is needed for survival?
How different are survival needs and day to day normal needs? What are the physical/material needs for survival? What are the emotional needs for survial? What other situations require people to ‘survive’? Watch clip – trailer for Bear Grylls Island show. This is about survival generally. Link back to last unit on Wants and Needs and the differences between the two. Give different groups different questions to discuss – allow 5 mins only. Then take feedback asking groups to nominate a spokesperson and feedback their best ideas. Are everybody’s needs the same?

The situation so far… Using the best ideas you heard in the discussion, answer the question: What do we need for survival on the Island? Challenge pupils to refer to wants, needs and the difference between the two in their response to Q1.

14 Get into character! Get into character and write a diary entry. Include a brief summary of what has happened and your thoughts and feelings. CHALLENGE: Include one positive and one negative aspect of being shipwrecked… Pupils could share these with the class.
