1 Slope From a graph 13-2

2 Introduction Slope is used in many forms of advanced mathematics and business math. Corporations use slope when determining predicted profit. Engineers use slope when designing anything from a car part to a skyscraper. We will use slope simply to get a better understanding of a graph. 13-2

3 The Goal… You will be able to find the slope of a line when given a graph of that line. 13-2

4 Slope Slope – The slope of a line measures how much it is slanted by comparing its vertical change to its horizontal change. Slope = m 13-2

5 When given the graph… How to find slope… Find 2 points
Go Left to Right Rise over Run Simplify run rise ( Rise ) m = ( Run ) 13-2

6 Example 1: Find the slope of the line shown. run Rise = 4 Run = 4 rise
13-2

7 Example 2: Find the slope of the line shown. Rise = 2 Run = 5 run rise
13-2

8 Example 3: Find the slope of the line shown. Rise = -2 Run = 4 rise
13-2

9 Example 4: Find the slope of the line shown. Rise = 6 Run = 3 run rise
13-2

10 On your own: Find the slope of the line shown. Rise = -1 Run = 2 rise
13-2

11 Horizontal and Vertical:
Rise = 0 Run = 4 8.) rise run 13-2

12 Horizontal and Vertical:
Rise = 5 Run = 0 9.) run rise 13-2

13 Finding slope from 2 points
Formula: 13-2

14 Finding slope from 2 points
Example 10: (3,2) & (7,8) 3 2 7 8 6 3 = 4 2 13-2

15 Finding slope from 2 points
Example 11: (6,1) & (2,3) 6 1 2 3 2 1 = - -4 2 13-2

16 Finding slope from 2 points
Example 12: (3,-2) & (-4,7) 3 -2 -4 7 9 9 = - -7 7 13-2

17 Examples 13-15 Try these examples and compare with a partner. 13-2
