6. Method 1: Anti Communist alliances – write this as a sub heading
NATO: North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (set up in 1949) SEATO: South East Asia Treaty Organisation (1955) CENTO: Central Asia Treaty Organisation (1955) The USA gave arms, money and advice to these countries to help supress Communist activities. Stalin reacted by creating the Warsaw Pact to unite all the Communist countries of Eastern Europe in an agreement to defend each other should there be a war! USE PAGE 100 Task: Name TWO countries which signed up each of these organisations!

What? Crazy times!
USA used their new atomic bomb on Japan in 1945
Both powers realised atomic bombs were the ‘future’ of strength and defence!
Both powers raced to build bigger, better and more deadly weapons!
They spied on each other to steal secrets
The US used U2 planes, which flew too high to be shot down, to fly over Russia and take photos of their weapons.
The US put nuclear missiles in Turkey pointing directly at the USSR!
Both sides hade planes and submarines equipped to carry nuclear weapons!

8. Mutually assured defence!

Each side had enough weapons to destroy the world!
The idea was that now no one would risk war as they would all die!
This theory was called:
The MAD theory!

Why?
Both sides wanted to prove they were superior and cleverer than the other! Then the other side would not risk attacking you and your people would feel safe!
What was the ‘missile gap’ myth?
There was a belief in the 1950s that the Soviets had more nuclear missiles than the US. The people were terrified!
But no one wanted to disprove the myth in the USSR AND the US!
Krushchev liked that it made him look stronger in Russia!
US army commanders could get more money from the government to make more weapons
