1 MnROAD/NCAT Partnership
Safer, Smarter, Sustainable Pavements through Innovative Research Allen Gallistel (presentation from Jerry Geib) ETF Meeting - November 29, 2017

2 National Pavement Preservation Study, 3-$120k
TPF-5(267) National Pavement Preservation Study, 3-$120k Development of a National Cracking Test, 3-$210k Partnership exists “within” the pooled fund. MnDOT is a subcontractor to Auburn Univ (NCAT is a non profit arm of Auburn). Test track is funded by a pooled fund, with AL DOT as the lead. Running 6-7 businesses out of the same checking account.

3 Outline MN Weather MnDOT site Ride Data US 169 CSAH 8
MnROAD – low volume OGF

4 Weather facts are not Boasting or complaining. Just our story.
Our challenge, Design for loads, Design for the environment (northern half of the state) Colder than 96% of the world’s population. Statewide temps Jan. 2, :48am Superpave -34 binders work!! -34C = -29.2F Duluth this winter 74 days below ZERO. A nice run of 23 consecutive days below zero. XX days below zero in the winter of The worst winter in the Twin Cities since Note International Falls -41

5 Low Temperature Cracking
Development of SuperPave Original MnROAD Test Sections (PG 64-22, PG 58-28) 1999 MnROAD Test Cells (PG 58-28, PG , PG 58-40) HMA examples for polymer binders. Pre Superpave, MnROAD thermal cracks were about every 25 feet. 500’ / 20 cracks = 25’ crack spacing.

8 National Pavement Preservation Study
Goals National Study (Climatic zones) Provide consistently collected data / analysis Quantify the life extending benefits Improve and/or extend the pavement life Cost effectiveness LIFE EXTENDING BENEFITS THIS IS MY MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THE STUDY THIS IS WHY THE HARD WORK

9 PreTreatment Condition US-169 Northbound Lanes
Smoother than CSAH 8 Surface cracking

10 Did not effect ride as much as maybe thought it would.

11

12 Two mills used. The three sections with better ride improvement were done full lane width. The other 3 sections used an 8’ mill.

13 PreTreatment Condition CSAH-8 East and Westbound Lanes
Very good tight HMA surface. Transverse cupped cracks.

14

15 Northern Low Traffic Preservation CSAH-8
EXPLAIN RIDE NUMBERS Single, double, triple. With fibers. With a rejuvenating emulsion. Under microsurfacing. Under Thinlay.
