1 What is this? What industries and products were born from this? Do you think the creators imagined the impact of this?

2 There is an evolution to everything
Just as the personal computer launched ideas and industries, the notion of democracy, the idea of self governing, launched ideas and movements that can still be seen today Fold your blue paper in half (hot-dog style) so that the timeline is near or in the middle Cut out the cards on the white sheet of paper As we discuss the evolution of democracy, fill in the missing information and dates and glue in the appropriate location on your timeline

3 The Roman Republic (509 BCE-27BCE):
Rome was ruled by a representative government in which citizens voted for people to represent them and make laws

4 Direct Democracy in Athens, Greece
(508BCE-404BCE) In Athens, a direct democracy was established in which every citizen voted directly for laws

5 Feudalism ( CE) Most Europeans were bound by feudal loyalties. Peasants owed loyalty to their Lord, who in turn owed loyalty to a King. The King’s power, however, was limited by his obligations to his Lords

6 The Magna Carta 1215 The King of England was forced to sign the Great Charter, which resulted in a limited monarchy. The King’s power was limited because he had to consult his nobles to tax citizens or go to war

7 Model Parliament (1295) The King of England summoned to a meeting nobles, knights, bishops, and two citizens from each town in England. This meeting set the precedent for electing representatives of the people to form Parliament, a legislature that made laws for England

8 Louis XIV ( ) In France, Louis XIV, an absolute monarch, controlled all aspects of government from the military to the treasury

9 The Glorious Revolution (1688)
This established England as a limited constitutional monarchy in which the power of the monarchy was severely limited by the laws and traditions established by Parliament

10 The American Constitution (1789)
Established a representative democracy in which citizens vote for representatives to make laws and a president to execute laws

11 Could we have a modern democracy if there had never been
Greek Democracy? Roman Republic? Magna Carta? Parliament? Thinkers who believed that humans deserved to be free and govern themselves?? You will enact a press conference with historical figures to discuss ideas about the ideal form of government.
