Because they’re awesome.
Functional Groups Because they’re awesome.
2
What is a functional group?
A Functional Group is a group of atoms that give a molecule certain characteristics. These are kind of like giving warriors different weapons, the type of weapon that they have will determine their fighting style.
3
Functional groups: are like prefixes and suffixes are to root words. They give the carbon skeleton different meanings just like prefixes and suffixes change rood words’ meanings.
4
R-COOH How do we write them?
Written out in the Molecular Formula Drawn in the Structural Formula or R-COOH The ‘R’s indicate a spot where the Rest of the molecule would go
5
Hydroxyl (Alcohol) Group
Molecular Formula Structural Formula R-OH Example-Found in water, monosaccharides, glycerol General Properties: Polar dissolve in water, Hydrophilic (water loving)
6
R-COOH Carboxyl Group Molecular Formula Structural Formula
Ex-Found in Proteins and lipids Properties: Tends to act like an acid, Polar, Hydrophilic
7
R-NH2 Amine Group Ex: found in amino acids-Proteins,
Molecular Formula Structural Formula R-NH2 Ex: found in amino acids-Proteins, Properties- Tends to act like a base, Polar, Hydrophilic
8
Properties: Nonpolar, Hydrophobic (water fearing)
Methyl Group Molecular Formula Structural Formula R-CH3 R Ex-Found in Lipids Properties: Nonpolar, Hydrophobic (water fearing)
9
properties: Polar, Hydrophilic
Sulfhydryl Group Molecular Formula Structural Formula R-SH R Ex-Found in proteins properties: Polar, Hydrophilic
10
R-PO4 Phosphate Group Ex-Found in DNA, RNA, ATP-Nucleic Acids
Molecular Formula Structural Formula R-PO4 Ex-Found in DNA, RNA, ATP-Nucleic Acids properties: Polar, Hydrophilic, Acid
