Not like the Greek perfect! (completed action w/ ongoing result) In Hebrew, what determines tense?

6 Perfect Exegetical significance
Views the action as a whole – pictures the action as complete Not necessarily completed! What determines tense? It’s like seeing an entire town at once, standing on a mountain with the town in the valley below

7 Imperfect Recognition Say the forms out loud
Prefix form – Always has a prefix, sometimes has a suffix

10 Imperfect Exegetical Significance
Focuses on the internal progress of the action Action – start, end, ongoing, repeated, habitual, etc. It’s like seeing a town from the inside while you are in it. You can’t see the whole anymore, but you can see the details of what is happening.

11 Imperative Recognition
Identical to 2nd person imperfect minus the prefix – say the forms! Might have a suffix, might not 2ms imperative vs. 3ms perfect – the vowels are different! Context is also a big clue

Strong request – When made to a superior (think of the entreaties in the Psalms)

Exegetical significance Often emphasizes purpose – answers the question “Why?” Other functions as well

Holem-waw between 2nd and 3rd root letters (careful to distinguish between passive participles!) No prefixes or suffixes – Infinitive absolutes stand absolutely alone!

Demonstrates a logical connection to what has come before (co-relation) It’s like a crowd of people standing together. They are loosely connected, but they are not standing one after another in strict sequence.

Waw conjunction attached to an imperfect verb (w/ article pointings) Also called “wayyiqtol”

Depicts a temporal or logical sequence It’s like standing in the queue. It’s one person after the other in sequence. This happened, then this, then this, then this, etc. This happened because of this, Etc.
