Worlds natural resources are dwindling away (gas, coal, oil, timber and ores)
This problem is shared with all designers as they:
Aim to preserve each resource
To minimise pollution
All products have a life span
Extend it through good storage, maintenance and repairs
Disposal should be in design strategy to reduce waste and pollution

5. Waste management This is a growing concern
Collection, transportation and sorting waste can be expensive
Consumers are objecting to disposal by
landfill and dumping – no benefits
Incineration – toxic gases

6. What can be done? Not to create waste in first place!
Reuse and repair old products – prolongs life span
Metals, plastics, paper and can be recycled to help produce new materials.

8. Designing for recycling
Design products that have products and parts that are easy to assemble and dismantle
Reduce amount of materials used in one product
Composite materials are difficult to recover and should be avoided where recycling is desirable
Accurate labelling of all materials used is important
Standard components as electrical and electronic parts should be easily removed
