1 VOCABULARY WORDS Desertification Desert Farming Aquaponics
Algae Farming Transesterification Chlorella (freshwater) Seaweed/Kelp (saltwater)

2 Desertification We Use the water Global Warming
So, deserts are spreading!

3 Desertification

4 Why don’t we just farm the desert
Bad soils Temperatures Hot in day Cold at night! Water Lack of availability! Evaporation rates are very high! c) Salt, pesticide, & herbicide buildup! Too much sun – Plants get Sun Burned

5 Desertification Using more water than we have!
Central Valley California

6 Even with all those problems
We are doing a bunch of it! Uses Vast Quantities of water in the desert!

7 Hydroponics in the desert
Soil - Doesn’t use any soil! *Also, produces 5 times the harvest per acre!

8 Hydroponics in the desert
2. Temperatures: Use heatsinks to cool during day Use heatsinks to warm the greenhouse at night

9 Hydroponics in the desert
3. Water: Well, still a bit of a problem. However, it uses 85% less water than conventional farming Greenhouse prevents a lot evaporation No pesticides or herbicides are used 100% of fertilizers are used Salt removal systems are available (reverse osmosis and condenser systems)

10 AQUAPONICS Is just like hydroponics, but instead of purchasing fertilizer you instead buy fish food? Well , just how is that going work?

11 AQUAPONICS The fish live in the water, they poop & pee in the water.
Well, where else are they supposed to do it? The water, poop, & pee mixture goes to the plants. They love it! They eat the waste out of the water, making the water clean for the fish ;)

12 AQUAPONICS When the fish grow in the tanks until…
Well, we get some meat to go with our vegetables.

13 How much of the world is desert? How many deserts border our oceans?

14 The Sahara desert is the size of US. Getting bigger
The Sahara desert is the size of US! Getting bigger! It’s surrounded by Salt water…

15 Name one single food source that can supply ALL of the calories, protein, fats, nutrients, and vitamins that you need to survive? Some people name milk. However, if you tried it you would end up with some serious health problems! But eat only Chlorella Algae = you would be in good health!

16 IMPORTANT NOTE! The Term Algae is a very broad term and means any numerous species! Some of them are TOXIC, and most freshwater species of “algae” are toxic! Can even kill the fish!

17 How do you grow Algae Need a spot to grow it. Can be a desert.
Matter of fact a hot sunny desert is a great place! Need lots of water, Oh no! Wait a minute don’t worry many can grow in salt water (SEA WATER) 70% of the plant is covered with that ;)

18 Seaweeds / Kelp Seaweeds are saltwater forms of algae.
Most species are edible and safe to eat. It does takes several years to grow, it doesn’t grow as fast as freshwater algae.

19 How do you grow Algae Grow it Harvested it Dried it
Used in countless products including as a food source.

20 Algae Needs Products From Algae
Sea Water – have to power them. Growing Space Sun Heat Nutrients – Bio Wastes / Fertilizers CO2 Gas O2 Gas Clean Water Foods: Carbs Proteins Fats in the form of oils Vitamins & Minerals Or can process into: Fuel Oil Cleaning Products

21 Oil from Algae We can extract fuel oil and other products from algae.
The more CO2 we give it the better it does, the algae LOVE IT!

22 Transesterification Remove oil from the algae
Process the oil: using a sodium hydroxide and methanol mixture, and you get out a biodiesel, glycerol, and proteins.

23 Grown in Large Farms Grows VERY fast!

24 Or, on smaller scale and it can even be done on rooftops

25 Algae in products today!

26 Varieties: of flavors & products
Chlorella – literally you could live on it and nothing else! Very complete nutrition.

27 Chlorella Is a freshwater algae. 45% Protein 20% Fat 20% Carbohydrate
5% Fiber 10% Vitamins and Minerals IMPORTANT NOTE: Most freshwater algae are TOXIC!!!!
