1 Warm-up: Title: 1/24 “Voice #1” Directions: Write down as many details as you can about the painting:

2 So…What is Voice Anyway?
Voice is what makes reading interesting When you see a painting and know immediately who it is by, you are tuning into voice. When you hear a song and know immediately who sings it, you are tuning into voice. Voice is the expression of personality, the fingerprint of creativity.

3 More about Voice… Voice is what gives color and texture to communication and gets us involved. Voice can be strong and distinctive or reserved and generic, but all communication has voice of some kind. Voice is also important in visual arts and music.

4 More about Voice… Voice is created through CONSCIOUS CHOICES.
In other words, the writer, painter, or musician purposefully chooses his or her “tools” (words, colors, instruments, etc.) and uses them in ways that create a certain effect.

5 When you are considering voice, you need to ask yourself these 3 fundamental questions:
What is he/she (or the work) saying? (What does the work mean?) How do you know? (What evidence can you find in the work to determine meaning?) How does he/she do that? (What tools does the writer/painter/singer use to create meaning, and how does he/she use these tools?)

6 Warm-Up “Voice #1” You will reexamine a self-portrait by Salvador Dali, a famous painter. Think about how Dali expresses his voice—his style or personality. Look carefully at the details of Dali’s self- portrait.

8 Write About It What is Dali saying about himself? (Consider the 3 questions you wrote.) Complete two sentences as if you were Dali in this portrait. I am… I feel… Base your statements on the picture, not your own feelings. How do you know what Dali is saying about himself? What evidence can you find in the picture that supports your statements?

9 Now You Try It… Think about how you would paint a self-portrait.
What colors would you use? What expression would you have on your face? How would you be dressed? What kind of background would you have? Would you have anything else in the picture beside yourself? What would these choices say about you? Using these questions as guidelines, write a few sentences describing what you would like your self-portrait to look like.

11 Narrative Feedback #1 How was the hook? Did it grab your attention? ________________________ Did they develop characters? Was there a clear conflict? Was the diction clear? (Diction = word choice) Was there an ending point and did it make sense? Did you understand the culture/ subculture? What is something they can add to make the story stronger (make more clear, more interesting, easier to follow, etc.)?
