1 On p. 42, answer this question:
DO NOW Clear your desk of all but your ISN and textbook. Title ISN p. 43: Newton’s 1st & 2nd Laws of Motion On p. 42, answer this question: Why is it important for people to wear seat belts?

2 AGENDA Do Now Demo of Newton’s 1st laws of motion
PowerPoint and notes of Newton’s 1st and 2nd Laws of motion. Practice calculating force and acceleration.

3 In the early 1600’s, Galileo suggested that once an object is in motion, no force is needed to keep it moving. This idea led Isaac Newton in the late 1600’s to propose his three basic laws about motion.

4 Newton’s 1st Law of Motion

5 Newton’s 1st Law of Motion
An object at rest will remain at rest and an object moving at a constant velocity will continue moving at a constant velocity, unless it is acted upon by an unbalanced force.

6 Remember when we learned about inertia?
Newton’s 1st law is also called the “Law of Inertia” What do you think affects the AMOUNT of inertia?

7 Inertia-resisting a change in motion. Inertia depends on mass.
More mass more inertia  greater force required to change its motion.

8 How does this video explain this picture?

9 Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion
Force= Mass x Acceleration Acceleration depends on the object’s mass net force acting on the object.

10 Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion
To increase or decrease acceleration, change the force, or change the mass.

11 Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion
To increase or decrease acceleration, change the force. Or change the mass. A speedboat pulls a 55 kg water skier. The force causes the skier to accelerate at 2.0 m/s2. Calculate the net force that causes this acceleration. (When you’re done with your work, turn to textbook p. 53)

12 LEFT PAGE (p. 42) Would you expect a race car to be light or heavy? Why? Turn to page 54 in your textbook. In the Math Practice box, calculate the answers for #3-4.

13 Materials Available to Build your Car
ONE 9-inch Balloon Air Elmer’s White Glue 2 Kabob skewers Scissors Two Straws Cardboard Tape YOU can use anything without a motor!* Pre-made cars (for example, Hot Wheels) are NOT allowed. *All materials must be school appropriate.
