1 Magnets and Magnetic Fields
Chapter 17 Magnetism Magnets and Magnetic Fields

2 Magnets 2,000 years ago Greeks discovered deposits of a mineral that was a natural magnet Magnetite or loadstone

3

4 Magnetism Magnetism refers to the properties and interactions of magnets

5

6 Magnets Permanent magnet - Magnetic all the time
Hard – hard to magnetize but stays Soft – easily magnetized but loses

7 Magnetic Field Magnetic field -exerts a force on other magnets and objects made of magnetic materials Strongest close to the magnet and weaker far away

8

9

10 Magnetic Poles Magnetic poles - where the magnetic force exerted by the magnet is strongest North and South Pole Bar magnet - the north and south poles are at the opposite ends

11

12

13 Magnetic Poles Magnetic field lines always connect the north pole and the south pole of a magnet

14 Magnetic Field Direction
When a compass is brought near a bar magnet, the compass needle rotates Needle rotates until it lines up with the magnetic field lines

15 Earth’s Magnetic Field
Earth acts like a giant bar magnet and is surrounded by a magnetic field that extends into space

16 Earth’s Magnetic Poles
Earth’s south magnetic pole - northern Canada about 1,500 km from the geographic north pole

17 Earth’s Magnetic Poles
Earth’s magnetic poles move slowly with time Earth’s magnetic poles switch places
